  • This just sounds like nimbyism dressed up as anticapitalist sentiment. Of course climate change is driving new business opportunities and economic development. Of course we're going to continue expanding resource extraction. You want scooters and cell phones? You want electricity and plumbing? You don't want a factory or construction site in your backyard, sure, but that's not a criticism that's just a whine.

  • I think like everything pedophilia is a spectrum. Big difference between a clandestine serial predator like a priest, and a young teacher fucking a high school senior. I'm only against it if it doesn't make my weiner move.

  • Female dominated cultural spaces are intolerable to me. Male dominated cultural spaces are intolerable to them.

It's almost like there's a difference in genders and maybe you should let men and women self segregate along lines of interest.

  • I don't really see the behavior these days as progress, and I think you could use a dose of cultural relativism when it comes to things like teen or arranged marriage. Sex isnt inherently violating. Your modern western ideology isn't automatically progress, if anything it's a return to pagan pre Christian sexual mores. I fully support sexual freedom but I also think its current form is inherently unhealthy. I say bring back heteronormativity.

  • I don't understand the sarcasm here. My comment was perfectly relevant to the OPs question. Yours sounds condescending. Are you being condescending? Because that's not very nice. I eat the rude.

  • Ehhhh, I'm less worried about the social effect of kids getting married at 16 or arranged marriage at 14 than I am 25 year olds using dating apps to get triple digit body counts, or the proliferation of strange kinks like furries

  • The answer is economy of scale, the collapse of the American manufacturing industry, bloated budgets, especially brand/marketing budgets, and the prices set by OEM manufacturers who themselves have bloated budgets. A lot of these brands arent actually manufacturers but middlemen for manufacturers. They do design, service, marketing and maybe assembly. But manufacturing is primarily done overseas. If it's manufactured domestically the labor and material costs are commensurate. Maybe the frame is made domestically, maybe not.

A perfectly decent bicycle is less than $100 in China.

  • I'm perfectly happy to give orthographic dominion to Webster. They can be our Academie Francaise. They can control the definition drift. And the pedants can use their educational privilege to suppress the poors. As it should be.
