  • One source with knowledge of the talks, which slowed after the Israeli ground invasion, said a central point of discussion was a demand by the Israeli side for Hamas to provide a full list specifying the name and details of each person held in Gaza. The Israeli side was unwilling to cease bombardments without receiving this list.

Hamas responded that it was unable to provide the list without a pause in the fighting, as the estimated 240 hostages were held by a number of different groups in places across Gaza. That suggested even Hamas leaders do not know for sure how many people are held captive, their locations or the number who have survived the bombardments.

There's a lot of conflicting information from the sources in this story though.

  • Certainly there are even more alternatives that exist in the miles wide gap between "raze all of gaza" and "stand idle".

First they should try to invest into defense, maybe some sort of air defense system to mitigate the almost daily rocket and missile launches.

  • The air defense system mitigates a lot, which does to lead people like you hand-waving tens of thousands of rockets fired indiscriminately.

Even those systems have weakness, as Oct 7th proved, they can simply be overwhelmed.

  • Hamas announced the start of the operation, stating that it had fired over 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel within a span of 20 minutes. Israeli sources reported that at least 3,000 projectiles had been launched from Gaza. At least five people were killed by the rocket attacks.

They overwhelmed the air defense systems through sheer numbers. Proving a bit of theoretical weakness

On 20 February, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was nominated to form a new government. The new government with Haniyeh as Prime Minister was sworn in on 29 March. These were the last contested elections to be held before Hamas took over the Gaza Strip in 2007; no new elections have been held since.

  • If you asked other folks they'd probably tell you that "the game only starts at max level with fully built out gear."

You'll always find groups of people min-maxing but in my guild the general philosophy was to enjoy the journey.

If that meant getting drunk and causing shenanigans in town that day, so be it.

  • On 28 October, reports emerged that the Israeli forces entered the Gaza Strip after intense strikes with artillery and missiles fired from warplanes.
On 28 October, Yahya Sinwar, leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, proposed that hostages be exchanged for Hamas members in Israeli prisons.

They might be a bit anxious about getting what they wanted out of their hostage taking efforts.
