  • Or finally take the first sip, then get distracted by something else and discover your cold cup on the counter hours later.

  • FYI, this community has a "no politics" rule, so I will be taking this post down. It would be a better fit in !politicalhumor@lemmy.world.

  • My wife's family once baked potatoes in the engine compartment during a road trip, just to see if it would work. Enough fumes leaked out of the engine that everything tasted slightly of oil and exhaust. Car engines are much tighter now, but I'm sure you still get a similar effect.

  • GPS devices only receive GPS signals; they do not broadcast any data. So carrying a basic handheld GPS device won't give away your position to anyone else. However, a smarter device like a phone or InReach emergency locating device can relay your location to others.

For communications, lots of people would suddenly get really interested in VPNs and encryption (for using the existing Internet), private wireless mesh networks (for city- and region-level communication), and even amateur radio. Owners of mesh nodes or radios would need to limit their broadcasting time and/or do a lot of moving around to avoid being located.

  • That's how they took out Maude Flanders. Some say it was an accident, but I don't buy it for a second.

  • "Alexander and the Gradual Descent Into a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Existential Crisis"

  • Not sure about Lewis and Clark, but I have read that David Thompson did.

George Vancouver recorded beaches strewn with old human bones. Around the same time he wrote journal entries along the lines of, "Wow, look at all this rich, uninhabited land that would be ideal for settlements!" I don't recall Ol' George ever putting two and two together.

  • Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

  • Guns, Germs, and Steel covers that in a brief but eye-opening way. When Hernando de Soto's crew first explored the Mississippi river in 1541 they wrote about all the people they found, but did not mention bison. A century later another set of Spanish explorers revisited the Mississippi and didn't record much at all about people, but commented on how prolific the bison were.

  • Off the Rez for the win. I hear Spokane has a good place, too.

I wish I had a chance to try Ê”ĂĄlʔal Cafe before it closed last year.

  • I love that Gen Alpha won't even get this reference because the movie came out 30 years before they were born.

  • I do not know of any instances focusing on religious communities, but I assume most general-purpose instances would be fine with you opening a religious community. If you search communities you will find lots of existing religious ones across several of the large instances, though they are generally not very active. If you find that the community you want already exists, but is dead, consider taking it over and bringing it back to life.

  • Gotta find those zero-day exploits!

  • The Escort was a really popular economy car in the 80's. Lots of high-mileage commuters ended up being sold or handed down to teenagers. By the late 90's the Civic had taken that role, at least where I lived.

  • 1982 Ford Escort wagon. It had been parked under a pine tree for much of its life before I got it, and was full of pine needles and mold. Be proud of your Mini Cooper!

  • Damn, that's a really nice first car!

This was my first, and it was older than me when I got it:
