  • I have some... Disappointing news for you...

    EDIT

Y'know what, I think I either completely fabricated a memory in my head or more likely got the person confused. I very vividly remember hearing about a prolific wealthy author who got called out for taking credit for a lot of other people's work but I now can't find any word about it being RL Stine despite my memory. No idea who I'm remembering.

  • Flying in a US based major commercial flight is essentially the safest form of transit there is. The "scariness" factor and the seriousness which which aviation incidents are treated wildly inflates the impression of danger. You are more likely to be injured driving to the airport than on the plane.

Also, the air in a plane is mostly not recycled, most of it is fed from compressed outside air brought in via the engines (before fuel is added obviously), the air that is recycled is HEPA filtered and won't get you sick.

It is frightening how many people believe that they are being safer by driving instead of flying. Driving is among the most dangerous common forms of transportation, the illusion that you have control over your safety in a car unlike a plane is warping your perspective. You are hundreds of times more likely per mile to die in a car accident than a major carrier US based flight.

  • Lol the Mohs scale is a hardness scale for gemstones/minerals sorry to disappoint. Goes from 1 to 10, 10 being diamond 1 being talc.

I honestly feel bad taking it away, I want an awesome scientific scale rating how hard scifi is.

  • Just to be clear, US domestic, major carrier flying is still staggeringly safe compared to essentially all other means of travel. The NTSB is not messing around and Boeing will have a lot to explain and answer for and the issue will be corrected.

Even in this exceptional case, nobody was injured.

  • MSF and Heifer International I think are two of the more unimpeachable charities afaik

I feel like I've also heard nothing but good things about Habitat for Humanity

Planned Parenthood imo is a great cause as well. Or IPPF internationally.

These are partially listed as strong examples because they are considered very good charities that help people but also because of the aid multiplication effect of them. Charities that provide stop gap aid are important but not at the expense of aid that provides knock on effects. Ie. More homes and shelter and more sustainable living leads to less poverty down the road, less crime, less broken homes etc... Helping the sick and injured removes need for intensive long term care by family and hopefully produces a new productive person who can help their community. Heifer International helps establish agricultural infrastructure that the locals own and operate themselves, not just feeding people. And perhaps most critically of all, Planned Parenthood gives women the right to take care of their bodies and make choices on it. A woman who grows up healthy and has choices gets more educated and doesn't make unplanned children that nobody is ready to care for properly. This has incredibly positive affects not just on the women's lives but on society down the road. Simple birth control/sexual health access produces incredible ripple effects in society, better educated women, better educated children, less poverty, lower crime.

  • Honestly people who insist on using Celsius for their daily lives rather than just for science have way more comfort than me having to deal with fractions of a degree on a regular basis. But I guess that's the point of metric, dealing with precise decimels constantly rather than just having a unit conveniently sized for the thing you're doing.

  • I didn't list those specific things because they're more important than obesity, I listed them because those are the root cause of a tremendous amount of our obesity and it would be much healthier to address those causes than to medicate.
