Yet GDPR requires if you operate anywhere but allow European citizens to register, you have to be GDPR compliant as well, or risk being blocked by an entire continent.

Use certbot, able to register and auto renew certificates. For easy mode you could use cloudflare, though I've learned the Lemmy back-end struggles with cloudflare sometimes, but there are workarounds as well, try it out!

I wouldn't take it so seriously, it's a passion project from a person learning about Rust and OS structure. Don't compare this project against industry professionals.

I will definitely be more active as well, there was no app with this much customization. Now that there is much more people will find exactly what they want.
