Canada has been increasingly a "branch plant economy" since the '50s.

Wealthy foreigners swoop in and buy up anything thwy can find.

That's why so many of the foreign ownership rules were put in originally. Unfortunately, Harper (and other conservative governments) have weakened or eliminated a lot of those rules.

Why does society need to have billionaires?

It doesn't. In an ideal utopian society there wouldn't be billionaires.

But, given the reality that billionaires do exist, I'd rather have them using their accumulated wealth on disease curing/prevention than them just sitting on the money or using it to actively fuck over entire populations (like Musk has been doing).

That doesn't mean Gatws or Buffet are *good billionaires *, it means they are less bad.

Shades of grey exist. Nuance is a real auseful ful thing.

But, given the reality that billionaires do exist, one that spends his money curing diseases is less bad than one who is closing hospitals serving war round populations or actively starving people.

The longer it goes on the easier it becomes.

Retailers are following the money and seeking out more Canadian supply to put on their shelves.

Manufacturers are increasing their output, or are diverting supply fthat they previously sent south.

And regular folks are voting with their wallets and making new buying habits - habits that, once established, will need some impetus to break when/if the US regains its sanity.

Carney provided no indication that his leadership would be any different.

Getting to net zero is a major reoccurring theme in Carney's book.

His proposal is to use regulatory frameworks to make it be in businesses best interests for them to choose to make better environmental choices.

The greater problem is that they think someone's ethnicity should impact how they treat that person.

Technically everyone is the same race - the human race.

I think it's only the prairies that even have coal plants anymore?

Specifically Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Manitoba is also a "hydro powerhouse". And is also an exporter of hydro to Ontario and the US.

I'm hoping the Alberta's aren't impressed about an Ontario politician parachuting in and "using" them.
