  • To my knowledge, DNS blockers not only miss a ton of ads, they also trigger several false positives.

A better solution is to switch to something not chromium like Firefox or whatever alternative the next Linux person to read this comment recommends

  • Man, you have way more confidence in the military not being full of MAGA idiots than I do.

As someone constantly surrounded by people in the military - they're almost all MAGA idiots, and the ones who aren't are fence sitting "libertarians" who go right wing every time.

  • I had a friend like this in college. His name was AJ. That's it. Just the letters.

Everyone in the department spent ages trying to guess what it stood for. I managed to glance his ID when we got lunch together once. His name was just AJ. There weren't even periods marking it as an abbreviation.

    Still haven't told anyone though

  • I was just discussing with a friend of mine how we're rapidly approaching the dead internet. At some point, many websites will likely just be chat bots talking to other chat bots, which then gets used to train further chat bots. Human made content is already becoming harder and harder to find on algorithm heavy websites like Reddit and facebooks suite of sites. The bots can easily outpace any algorithmic changes they might make to help deter them, but my fb using family members all constantly block those weird Jesus accounts and they still show up constantly

  • For everyone's reference, D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was not only ineffective, they were anti-effective. Their presence and total demonization of weed not only didn't reduce drug usage rates, they frequently increased the rates.

They've been known to be ineffective since at least 2004: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1448384/

DARE is a wild program. They finally admitted defeat to drugs and have switched to suicide prevention. The kids that do petitions for them, at least around me, are militant. I had one follow me into a restaurant to keep pestering me. Didn't stop until I told the children to kindly fuck off already

  • I should specify - I have family of various, but typically quite low, technical skills and of various far distances apart that use the server. So it's either walk them through getting the IP of every device they access with or driving up to about 8 hours away to do it myself.

  • Yeah, desensitizing people to violence is the original argument. It's always "if they're willing to shoot people in video games, why not real life!?" Crap.

It's been disproven so often that my shitty little uni assigned that research to first year psych students. It's not a thing. Media is a reflection of society, not society itself. Violent societies like violent media. Violent media doesn't create violent societies. Propaganda based media can, but no one's committing murders cause they saw Knives Out or played COD 23

  • My personal website that primarily functions as a front end to my home server has been getting BEAT by these stupid web scrapers. Every couple of days the server is unusable because some web scraper demanded every single possible page and crashed the damn thing

  • Have we looped back around to blaming media for violence again? This was disproven in the 70s with rock, the 80s with dungeons and dragons, the 90s with metal, and the 2000s with anything anti war or America. Can we stop trudging up this argument? Please?

  • Why'd you bring up tem tem specifically? It's supposed to be "Pokemon but an MMO". That's the entire appeal. I had Pokemon loving friends that played it at launch and loved it dearly. It's sad that it's died, but if you want a single player version of tem tem, there's about 22 Pokemon games according to Bulbapedia. Go play one of those.
