  • No, you weren’t. You were injecting your own pseudoscienentific opinion. AZT did not “kill thousands” and the article did not make that claim, so you’re sourcing it from a notable liar.

If you want to talk about why the study was not ideally run, be my guest, but AZT is effective for what it does: Preventing HIV from using the cheapest pathway to insert itself into your genome. It is why it’s still part of the drug cocktail to this day.

  • Tickless means it’s not based on the computer frequency and idle CPUs can stay idle rather than being annoyingly brought into high power mode ever 100 Hz, but it’s still firing interrupts based on scaling timed variables.

    They’re now called “Dynticks”

SUSE wrote the vaguely more understandable write up that Linux foundation links to: https://www.suse.com/c/cpu-isolation-full-dynticks-part2/

BTW, the Linux RCU code is evil but interesting: https://www.p99conf.io/session/how-to-avoid-learning-the-linux-kernel-memory-model/

  • Zidovudine killed thousands? Bullshit. Magic Johnson is alive today because of Antiretrovirals, of which AZT was the first.

The median survival time of AIDS patients on azidothymidine was 4.5 times higher when compared to a historical AIDS group who had not received the drug.

  • Why will a tokamak never work, exactly? We’ve been running fusion experiments in them for 60 years and have a pretty good idea that we can make one big enough to produce power. We’re just baby stepping through the work so we don’t build a $30 billion dollar power plant that’s missing a design element.

K-DEMO, JT-60, DEMO, CFETR, STEP, and the US DoE’s planned reactor suggest a high level of confidence that the science is already there. It’s just an engineering problem, much like the nuclear bomb in 1935.

  • British Thermal Units. It’s the energy needed to heat 1 lb of water 1 degree F.

The bad part is that no one bothered to set the starting temp of the water so there’s 5 separate standards for what the hell a BTU actually is, which makes it a really bad standard.

  • WE INVENTED IT AND BUH GAWD, WE WILL MEASURE IT IN MURICA UNITS!

Ignore how nonsensical BTUs are: Gonna shove energy and weight into a single measurement and it changes based on the initial temperature of the water.

  • Yea, “making all the other workers unemployed” as a response isn’t really equitable. Make it economically unfeasible but “I fucked up your time card, here’s $100” is better than “I fucked up your time card, get a new job.”

Companies that thrive off the practice get wrecked, mistakes still have substantial payouts to ensure compliance.

  • I’m aware. Stalinism has more in common with Fascism than either has with capitalism with a well supported social safety net. To say “Well, leftism can’t devolve into Fascism but capitalism can!” is odd semantics because leftism can and obviously has repeatedly fallen into the authoritarian trap.

    I mean,

dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation.

    Hitler or Stalin?

  • I actually disagree from a systems engineer perspective: The program doesn’t actually know shit if those bits hit any permanent medium, just that the OS told them “I’ll take care of it” it could be sitting in a write back cache when you save, see the “write complete” and rip the power and that’s all gone now. Basically, I don’t like promising durability when it’s not really there.

  • When I lived in a poorer neighborhood it was more neighborly, but there was four shootings within a block of my house leading to three deaths, my garbage can was used as target practice, there were needles constantly found in the park on the corner, someone got mad and blew up their apartment building and muggings nearby were frequent.

I’ll take the nicer neighborhoods where interactions are less frequent thank you very much.
