  • Yeh? I just opened a business. Robots can talk to me for $50 per minute. Me to talk back? They can't afford it.

    Oh, hey, I just noticed you're a robot. That'll be $50.

  • Sewers. Ever visited an outhouse in a place where it's 0 degrees out? yOw!

Or carried two pails of water 2 blocks, twice, to start heating it while you did it 3 more times for the rest of your bath? Lots of people still do that.

  • I didn't mention any problems I don't have. I just don't waste time on updates I don't need. I already have the older one, and it works just fine. (Now and then I hear of a new version that's better, and switch to it.)

Besides, we both know that sometimes updating Linux software does create problems ... which is proven by the existence of Arch Wiki ... and Debian stable ... or force us to relearn some 'improved' features (prime example: KDE's 'Kate' editor.) And don't get me started on Gnome.

Anyway ... so long as you're enjoying yourself with Arch, good for you.

  • Oh yeah, I don't doubt Arch is solid, just different strokes for different folks. I got a bunch of stable apps I use all day every day to get stuff done, including some coding and keep up. Solid OS for my needs, no racing stripes, does what I need -every- day. I invest my limited OS time in maintenance/backups.

I recently began moving to Mint 21 from 3 NO-TROUBLES years in 19.3. Install from ISO in 20 minutes, copy my apps & configs over, done. Just as with 19.3. No doubt about smooth sailing. Point releases every few months, done in 5 min. Support 4 more years.

  • Ubuntu's updates keep up with Debian's snail-like stable version. In over 10 years using Ubuntu-based distros, I've seen very few app updates ... even between major updates.

Debian's unstable may have more updates, I'd guess. (I might actually try Debian 12 soon.)

And there's always the PPA route. I'm usually busy using current app versions, and so don't often understand that 'bleeding-edge' approach (esp. with all the memory and cores we've got.)

Gotta admit that Arch is what keeps the Arch Wiki a super resource!

  • Sounds good, tho they're not finished yet, hope it works out for them.

  • Cookies: Cookie autodelete or Forget me not

Block site (so you're not sent where you don't want to go)

Wayback Machine (if you use it much)

Audio equalizer (to better understand mumbly / old Youtube audio)

Dark background and light text (so you don't go blind)

  • Remember that movie? "We want BWYAN!"

  • That makes the most sense ... as a source of info, like a map, or nearby business locations, or quick advice.

If you don't mind leaking your current position. (I wonder if cows' eartags do that these days.)

  • Gotta have those pontoons

  • I got a mobile phone because somebody gave me one. I can understand the price I paid for it after discovering all of the annoyances. OH the LUXURY!

WHY anyone puts up with the terrible hardware compromises, the terribly designed UIs, the shit software, the crappy audio, the constant charging, the security threats, the unregulated demands on our time, etc. etc. is beyond me.

I use one roughly once a week, ONLY because I found a really cheap plan. But then, I never needed to talk to someone while I was walking down the street - and if I just had to (never), there were public phones everywhere. A dime for unlimited local calls. No fear of dropping a phone booth. Or accidentally leaving the phone booth at the bar. And they had doors - so you could hear yourself think. Or change into your costume.

I suppose that back when beaverskin hats and buckboards were trendy, everyone just knew they had to have one. But oh, the price we're paying.

  • Is there really anyone left who -would drink it?

Instant coffee, instant sex ... not pleasant, but over with quik. Now - get back to work. Slacker.

  • Are there any celebrities that are confirmed to be using lemmy?

Sheesh I hope not. Aren't their marketers doing a good enough job? Many celebs want to be treated like ordinary people (which they all are, aside from their cardboard cutouts) and the last thing they need is be mobbed by idolators.

  • Stop googling! Try your search 'Donald trump Antichrist' at duckduckgo. The link at my first DDG result pointed out this article: https://hartmannreport.com/p/is-donald-trump-the-antichrist

What's weird to me is that people think that a 2000-year-old story of mixed historicity (a story which fell into the control of the Romans and their church ... and 2000 years later the 'Dead Sea Scrolls' fell into the hands of scholars who failed to publish for decades) ... that has been translated and interpreted and re-interpreted by anyone/everyone that whole time ... can be relied on for any clues at all. The prophesy may have already happened, or simply be a horror story to scare children.

  • When I first tried swimming, it took me quite a while to get to the floating point.

  • Makes it look like they're doing something about crime. Doesn't stop anyone from selling or buying them one, though, does it?

  • For years they all claimed "oh, we have to snoop unto you because we get to learn what you like and don't like, and then we can show you ads for things you might value."

Has anyone, anywhere, found a way to make ads more attractive to the individual viewer? NOPE. If they had, they'd have been demonstrating it - bragging about it. Was I ever more likely to buy something because of an ad on TV? Did I ever wonder where the yellow went? Never. I comparison-shopped to get the best value for the dollar. If we all do that, then may the truly best product win.

  • I haven't seen a valuation on Youtube ... but recently saw that Twitter sold for $44B and X is now at $12B.

I've enjoyed viewing YT videos for many years ... learned A LOT ... and thought quite highly of them. I can see charging to see long films (bandwidth and licenses isn't cheap) ... but piling ads on top of thousands of private people trying to help others out (for little profit)? Ads on educational programming? Yeah... it's WORSE than what Cable did to films.

Reminds me of that old song lyric ...

Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss
