  • Tell me about it.

I also use deadbeef because of the plug-in support, although I haven't experienced much lag myself.

The media library management definitely doesn't come anywhere close to FB2K, though, sadly.

  • Yep. A couple of years ago they released the 2.0 version, which supports 64-bit architecture and allows for dark mode support as well.

  • Foobar2000.

By far the best, most customizable local music player app ever. Plus it's open source free.

  • Not evil enough it seems, based on the fact that reactionary types are apparently getting their knickers in a twist over it.

  • I don't think so - to me it seems more about weighing up the student's need vs the parents' decision. The school district want to honor the student's wishes as much as possible but if they are <18 they are not legally an adult, so the school ultimately should defer to the parents.

Sensible from legal standpoint, even though it would suck for the student.

  • If anyone wants more context, you can read the document here.

The advice on the subject of informing parents reads:

    Telling parents

Note that the ACLU is very protective of a student's right to privacy in his/her sexuality. If a school employee believes that "a situation exists which presents a serious threat to the well-being of a student," the employee must notify parents without delay. (Utah Code 53A- 13-302(6)(b)(i)). Other than a threatening situation, volunteering known information about a student's sexuality with parents is not advised.

Consider the following factors in making a determination about talking to parents:

    • Age of students
    • Whether student is being bullied based on sexuality or gender identity
    • Student requests
    • Knowledge of parents' relationship with students

What if a student asks to be called a preferred name/pronoun and parents object? Unless the student is 18, parents' requests should govern.

    Seems pretty reasonable to me.

  • Nice work.

    I'd suggest adding

Material Files (File Manager) looks more stock android than Amaze and even includes an FTP server function.

Kvaesisto (Launcher) is a non-traditional launcher but it's easily the most polished FOSS android launcher IMO, and is still actively being maintained.

Noice (Uncategorized?) is a very good calming background noise app that allows you to create custom combinations of sounds.

Also, I spotted one small typo - Public Transport is an uncountable noun, so shouldn't have an 's' on the end.

  • Automoderator was really introduced to reduce loads on moderators. As such, how strict the filters were was mainly down to them.

The reason many moderators used it was to reduce spam from brand new accounts/sock puppets and to enforce community-defined posting rules. On the sub I co-ran, you only needed +5 comment karma in order to be allowed to post.

  • Ah, ok.

As far as DE-hopping, it does come with some problems. At the very least, you will have a ton of different apps installed, as each DE will want its own file manager, terminal, etc. At worst, you will get conflicts and it can end up a right mess.

I would personally keep a separate virtual machine or Ventoy USB separate from your main machine, as it will give you the freedom to mess around with different desktops to your heart's content. If that isn't an option for whatever reason, then at the very least make sure you create a separate user account for each separate WM/DE you install so that shit doesn't break.

  • Go for it. Switching to Linux has never been easier than it is today. I still keep a Windows virtual machine for when I need to use specific Windows applications, but aside from that I have been running Linux on my work and gaming machines for two years now with zero issues.

I'm surprised to hear you had problems with Proton - in my experience it has been seamless, although there are still some titles that don't work so well with it. I don't play any games that require anti-cheat, though, so there is that.

It's never easy to say which distro is best, because every user and every machine is different. I personally recommend Nobara instead of Fedora, as a lot of the post-install tweaking is already done for you and it should even install the latest Nvidia drivers for you as well.

  • Not sure what the traffic has to anything - Siam Paragon is at the heart of Bangkok's public transport system. Most people get there by train.

What is surprising is that a 14-year-old was allegedly the shooter and that he managed to get the gun through the metal detectors at the entrances.

  • I use the Night Theme Switcher app to automatically control the light/dark mode . Might also work for you.

Also, it's generally advisable to use the adw-gtk3 theme rather than Adwaita if you want GTK3 and GTK4 apps to look consistent.

  • Are there any gtk.css files in ~/.config/gtk-4.0/?

    If so, delete them.

  • I get that you're trying to be funny, but no they're not exactly "equally valid".

The WHO lists RF waves (including those from cellphones) under category Group 2B of possible carcinogens, along with a bunch of other stuff.

Are they being overly cautious? Almost certainly, yes. However, the idea is not inherently ridiculous.

  • Certainly, but the existence of this research is why countries like France are taking this precautionary approach.

  • To be fair, it's not completely made-up. There is a body of evidence that suggests that even non-ionizing EM radiation may have so-called "biological effects" in humans.

Organizations like the Environmental Health Trust have been banging the "cellphones cause infertility and cancer" drum for years, and cites numerous studies on their website.

Of course, much of this research is of questionable relevance to real-world use cases involving actual phones and actual humans as opposed to, say, a bunch of rats being exposed to low-power microwaves in a lab for hours on end, but it exists nonetheless.

  • There is vast ocean of difference between collecting non-personalized, aggregate data internally to inform UI design decisions or improve system performance on the one hand and secretly logging personal information in order to pass on or sell to third parties on the other.

  • I don't think the "some apps don't work with Wayland" argument is particularly valid any more. The vast majority do, and most of those that don't are outdated anyway. Gnome ships with it by default and KDE is really close to that point as well.

There really shouldn't need to be any debate whether to implement it or not at this point- clinging on to X11 is just delaying the inevitable.

  • There are three main types of "liberalism" that generally exist in Western democracies, and each of them is quite distinct.

    1. Classical liberalism - emphasizes individual freedom, limited government intervention in the economy, and the protection of natural rights, such as life, liberty, and property.
    2. Neoliberalism - emphasizes free markets, deregulation, privatization, and reduced government intervention in the economy.
    3. Social Liberalism - combines the values of individual freedom with a belief in the role of government in addressing social and economic inequalities through healthcare, education, and welfare programs.

Typically these days, especially in the US, most people think of #3 when they hear the word "liberal" in a political sense, I'd say.
