No anti-LGBTIQ content in those books whatsoever. If they did have such a message, then I could understand people hating the author and the books, but as it is, the books do not reflect the world view of the author about this particular topic.
...and on the topic of supporting the author by buying the books (from a different comment); you can buy them secondhand. That way Rowling makes one less sale as secondhand shops, private sellers etc. don't have to pay royalties to her.
but I’ve definitely stopped listening to artists for theirs.
That's a personal choice, and I'm completely fine with that. If you can't help but dislike a work of art because it always reminds you of the bad thing its creator did/said, there is no shame in no longer engaging with said art as it won't bring you happiness anymore.
What I don't get are people who go "waaah noo, how DARE you like that song! The singer is an asshole, you have to hate their music now!" ... no, I don't have to. And that does not automatically mean I am okay with what the singer did - it just means that their actions haven't ruined the song for me.
Ok? So what If you already bought and read the books, does that mean you'll have to throw them away, burn them, and you're never ever allowed to enjoy the fictional story of Harry Potter ever again because the author is an ass....? Or that by liking the fictional story you automatically support her world view as well, finances aside?
It's the exact thing I described. Yes J.K. Rowling is nuts but that does not mean that you have to hate the Harry Potter books / movies. You can hate the author for what she did and said independendly from the stories she wrote.
Oh you'd be surprised ... by the way, the same goes for literally everything at the bakery counter. Heard a customer complain once that she won't ever buy pretzels in the store again because they weren't actually freshly made, the employees just tossed prepackaged frozen pretzels ino the oven yadda yadda ... uhhhm lady, do you really think they're kneading dough behind the scenes?! Never wondered why your croissants, bread rolls and the like always have the same shape, size and weight? It's almost as if they were made in a factory or something ...
....yet these, too, are treated like first choice over the frozen bread rolls you can bake at home, because "a real baker made them" ...
Supermarket employee here. We have a "fresh" fish counter selling stuff like whole mackerels and raw salmon fillets and the like.
Each and every one of these has been frozen at least once - this is a mandatory health hazard prevention thing (to kill off parasites etc) and also basically the only food-safe way to transport them in great quantities over long distances without them going bad. They get delivered frozen solid, get thawed behind the scenes and then put on display / on ice for customers to buy. And then they're lying there all day long until someone happens to buy some .... people still treat the pre-packaged fish from the frozen foods aisle as a second choice, even tho those have NOT been lying around half-thawed in the open air for 10 hours straight.
Long story short, "fresh" fish from the counter is less fresh than the frozen stuff, despite customers commonly believing it to be the other way around.
The inability to distinguish between creation and creator. It is completely fine to like Harry Potter and still think that J.K.Rowling is nuts. You can dislike Dolly Parton's songs and still appreciate her for the awesome human being she is.
The vast majority of people obviously can't do that for some reason. It's either "both creation and creator are shit" or "both are awesome" and nothing inbetween, to the point that some folks automatically assume you're a climate change denier because you listen to Meatloaf, or do a 180° turn about liking/disliking movies, arts, novels etc. depending on what their authors did IRL. And don't get me started on Nintendo fanboys .... if you tell them you love the Zelda franchise but dislike Nintendo as a company, they'll rip you apart because you're obviously not allowed to have anything else but a single-track blanket opinion about literally everything they ever did.
If you like someone, you are not obligated to support each and every one of their actions, decisions or world views, and if you dislike someone you can (and should IMHO) still appreciate it if they do something good.
Fixed a timing bug were 5 hours of work only made the clock advance by 5 minutes, and 5 minutes of spare time randomly made the clock advance by 5 hours.
I'm no wine drinker myself, but I've heard that you can use frozen grapes instead of actual ice cubes so the melting water won't dillute the wine. Have you ever tried that, and if yes, did it actually work as intended? (just curious)
Lukewarm and room temperature are both fine for me, but I prefer actual room temperature, as in "I made coffee 5 hours ago and forgot to drink it" style.
In all honesty? I have absolutely no idea why this law exists. I only know that, when my mother went to rehab there after a car crash, she wasn't allowed to bring her black umbrella because the facility didn't want to risk a lawsuit. It wasn't even a SUN umbrella, mind you, but they still didn't want to allow it. That's the only reason I know about this dumb law in the first place.
.. the first few videos are in rather poor quality tho. Like I said, it was more if a "idgaf" thing when I started it. It gets better after a few videos ;)
The discussion that sparked the series was about an awkward in-game "completion" counter of which most people (kind of rightfully) assumed that it is overall game completion, when in reality it only tracks the amount of icons on the map.
My "best" work so far wasn't even intended to become one. I had a throwaway youtube channel with eleven or so followers at the time, and got tired of having the same discussion on reddit over and over again about a certain videogame mechanic, so I decided to record myself playing the game to offer definite proof for my point. It was originally planned as a low-effort, purely spite-driven idgaf video clip that I could just link whenever the discussion popped up again instead of trying to explain stuff for the umpteenth time. It was never meant to be big, important, or fun.
It ended up spiralling into a 6 month long project that proved to be the weekly source of entertainement for 15k poeple, as my channel blew up during that project. I got a whole lot of positive feedback, massively improved my video editing skills thanks to helpful tips and tricks by the community/followers, and had a lot more fun than I originally anticipated. Sometimes I still go back and watch an episode or two, read through the comments and can't help but smile - it just feels nice to know that I was able to entertain thousands of people for half a year with something that I also enjoyed. The world is a bad place for many, so a little reality escape and some extra dopamine every now and then can never hurt.
I recently started the same type of challenge run again for the sequel of that videogame and I'm really looking forward to the next 6 or so months ;)
I live in Hesse, Germany. The dumbest law I know about (that's still in use but rarely enforced) is this:
Aus der Altstadtsatzung der nordhessischen Kleinstadt Bad Sooden-Allendorf: In § 10 Abs. 6 ist geregelt, dass „Sonnenschirme […] beige-, pastell- oder sandfarbig“ sein müssen. Wer dieser Regelung zuwiderhandelt, begeht eine Ordnungswidrigkeit und kann nach dem Gesetz über Ordnungswidrigkeiten (OWiG) mit einer Geldbuße von bis zu 15.000 Euro bestraft werden.
Translation: In that particular town, sun umbrellas have to be pastel/cream colors. If you put one up that is too bright / too dark / too whatever, it can lead to a fine of 15.000€ (ca. $16,700).
You can make "Toast Hawaii" the same way: Slice of toast, put ham on it, a ring (or pieces) of pineapple on top, cover with a slice of cheese, pop it in the microwave for a minute or two until the cheese has melted. One of the rare "non traditional" meals my grandma used to love, and super easy to make.
Bulk buying big units of almost anything will lower the overall cost of serving sizes. Sure, the initial purchase might be expensive once, but in the end, you're still saving money.
For example, I love rice and cook with it often. But the supermarkets around these parts only have these shitty 250g mini packs that already cost 2.50€ - just for the rice itself. No sauce, no veggies, no meat - just the effing rice. That's 10€ per kg.
The overseas market one town over sells 20 kg bags of the same type of rice for 30€ which is equal to 1.50€ per kg. Sure it takes a bit of extra time to drive that far and you need to have 35€ to spare, but buying the same amount of the same rice in smaller packs would cost me 200€ instead.
If there is something you eat often anyway and you have a place to properly store it, always buy the "big" units.
I don't know how common it is, but I like carrot stew (EDIT: hutspot). 1kg carrots is around 1.30€ here, a bag of 2.5kg potatoes is around 5€, peel and cut it all, add a chunk of smoked bacon for flavor (ca. 2.50€ per piece) add water, broth, salt, a bit of pepper, maybe parsley, and just boil it all until it's soft. Onion and garlic to taste - they don't need to be fresh. Freeze-dried works just as well.
You end up with ca. 3,5 kg for 8.80€ and If you go by 500g per serving, that's 7 servings for 1,25€ each. A little more if you buy the onion and garlic fresh, but it doesn't make much of a difference both in taste and price, so I usually go with the freeze-dried stuff. If there happens to be too much broth, you can just dump a bag of mashed potato powder into the pot.
If you have a freezer, you don't need to cook everything at once - get some zip bags, fill them with the peeled / cut raw ingredients in equal parts and store it in the freezer. If you want to cook it, just dump the contents of a bag into a pot, add water & spices and boil - no need to thaw first.
I used to cook this whenever we got together for roleplaying sessions and it was my turn to host. ;) It's not difficult to cook, cheap, tasty and feeds a bunch of nerds for the evening or supper for yourself for a week.
