  • Some of us who lived in that era and who are tech savvy think the privacy paranoia is little more than the equivalent of TSA's security theater at airports.

There is nothing stopping anyone from finding out exactly who you are, where you are, and what you're doing. We all carry locator devices today that never existed in the era of the phone book.

Our social security numbers weren't in databases with internet exposure where financial companies with information "security" could have them leak. Everyone's has leaked now.

A lot more people than you'd think are easily googled right down to address, family names, current phone number, past addresses... you name it. Leaks happen every single day and big data is everywhere monitoring your everything.

Having your name, address and home phone number in a book that only has regional numbers and isn't widely distributed beyond the local scope is the the smallest privacy concern.

Seems like the average young person is fine posting photos and videos on all the social media platforms journaling their whereabouts and habits too.

  • It's a catch 22.

Want search engines to see your data to serve it to users looking for your content? Needs to be open.

Want to stop businesses from "profiting" from viewing your data? gotta block all access.

You literally can't have it both ways. This is a binary choice. People are going to "steal" the data anyway, not that reddit should own ANYTHING posted by users, ever.

What if every news site blocked reddit referrals unless reddit paid $1 per click or someshit? It's the same thing. Reddit is an advertising company, nothing more. They need the clicks.

  • I disagree. They used what they had and were certainly researching continual improvement all along. They've had automation wherever they could implement it all over.

The challenge is finding the right human teams to design the automation that will be successful. Engineers with a background in practical robotic automation are not exactly common.

Every major company is in a race to reduce wage cost to 0 and maximize growth and p/e. For amazon their growth and revenue numbers kept growing despite offering above market for unskilled labor, albiet for horrible jobs. They'll continue to try and eliminate as many FTEs as they can until all they employ are people who manage, deploy, maintain, design and implement automatic systems.

  • Social media has legitimate research potential. This doesn't stop any kid from doing what they're already doing: using social media on their cell phone with cellular data.

I worry that a bill like this will have riders attached that would change scope drastically. I honestly think in this case it should be up to the school district to self regulate and let the local communities decide what is right in their districts.

  • Yeah, i'm sure microsoft won't do anything to increase monetization on their 69 billion dollar purchase. The objective is to make blizzard's games better by minimizing highly profitable systems like microtransactions, battle passes, DLC season passes, xp boosters, in game real money stores.

They wouldn't be buying these properties to try and milk as much profit as possible at all. No sir.

  • The military budget is bigger than Social Security and nobody bats a fucking eye

This is incorrect. National Defense spending is 13%. Social Security is 23%. Sauce: https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/federal-spending/

Most people don't realize that entitlements have been the lion's share of the US budget for a long time. Defense spending used to be much higher but has declined significantly since the cold war.

  • The argument the idiots use is "We want to see government theft!" instead of just having a line item at the end of your receipt showing tax collected and the breakdown. It's not like we don't have toiletpaper roll length receipts already.

  • Cheaper than outsourcing to poor countries with middling English speaking capability.

Coming to call center lines near you: voiced chatbots to replace the ineffective, useless customer support lines that exist today with the same useless outcomes for consumers but endless juggling back and forth without any real resolutions. Let's make customer service even shittier, again!

  • We desperately need footage of this to make any conclusions.

The human driver hit her first, and knocked her into the neighboring lane...

So she was hit and flung into another lane...

...directly in front of a Cruise autonomous vehicle (AV) that was driving around by itself with no-one on board. The self-driving car then ran her over and came to a stop on top of her body, turning on its hazard lights. Her leg was pinned down by the back tire.

So it stopped Like others have mentioned, driving over someone under a car can cause more injury than not moving. Was she screaming to move forward/move back? Was she flung in a way that a human driver could have stopped in time?

If this was just a hit and run and there was no footage like what was provided by the ai car it could be that the victim or her family would be 100% on the hook for the medical bill. It will be interesting to see if the perpetrator is found and the footage surfaces with details so we can get some answers.

    edit: From another article

The initial impact was severe and launched the pedestrian directly in front of the AV.

  • For over a year it's been fairly trivial to play unauthorized copies of games online with normal players. Should be no surprise they are pulling the plug after their copy protection is broken.

Should get about 6 more years out of the Nintendo Switch's online service before they pull the plug too if this is any indication.

  • Find me a DC Electric Engine sold as a part from GM, Ford, Toyota, BMW, Honda, Tesla, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Buick, Renault, Mazda, Bentley, Kia, Chrysler, Jeep, Audi or Subaru. I bet every car with one from the last 30 years is going to call it a DC Electric motor.

We're not talking about the usage of Motor and how it's been used with other words to describe all manner of things from locomotives to motels. We're talking about the Engines and Motors that power vehicles themselves.

Anything less is just motorboating for the sake of enjoyment, and who doesn't like a good motorboat? It's just off topic is all.

Next you're going to tell me that Cars aren't just a shortened version of Horseless Carriage.

Oh and btw, when you look for "motoroil" the listings are all Engine Oil.... guess the terminology has changed since our great grandparents. https://www.autozone.com/motor-oil-and-transmission-fluid/engine-oil
