  • If you've been running these "for years", you certainly should know the pitfalls of switching to a brand new distro. Like the exact situation you're asking about.

You should also know that packages tagged as compatible with another version of any distro won't harm your current one to just install and find out if it works.

As many other commenters are saying, we don't know what your problem is, or why you're here.

  • Man, if you're this green, just go back to RHEL 9 until they come back and tell you it's okay to do exactly as they say. Did you just come here to complain, or do you honestly not know how this all works?

Literally download the RPMs like I said if you don't know how to use backref repos.

  • 🤦

So do like I said and visit the Docker official docs, setup the RHEL repos, and install it. Or, you can just install the ROM packages individually. OR you can wait a few weeks until the official packages show up which will ease the the same thing.

    Your choice.

  • It's not only resolving for devices in the Tailnet if you saw apt hitting MagicDNS resolvers though. You have something misconfigured.

If you're not familiar with networking or how DNS resolvers work, I'd start by checking your current node connected to the Tailnet and determine where your DNS requests are coming from with dig or nslookup, then check your local resolver configurations, and other devices as well. Make absolutely sure that you've got a split DNS config (meaning you're not using the fqdn of nodes in the Tailnet and not shortnames), and that the custom domain is showing as a target for searching on restricted resolvers in your resolver configs. Then branch out and check your other nodes to make sure they have a similar configuration.

  • You've got a serious misconfiguration and are being rate-limited by their resolvers.

MagicDNS should only be resolving for devices on the Tailnet, not things like apt or Kuma. See here.

A Restricted Nameserver should be resolving for only your Tailscale Devices, and Global Server for everything else. You should never have normal services on your machines reaching out on Tailscale to query DNS unless you want the behavior you're current seeing, which is unnecessary.

  • It serves a very specific purpose for very particular people. It's meant to be as minimal as possible, and highly configurable, which means less rich interaction pieces and opinionated design decisions. Lots of developers still use it though.

  • A minute plus sounds like slow networking, but also, just organize your folders betters and you'll fix the problem right there.

I already get the feeling this is a post where OP is going to ignore all same advice to fix the issue, insist they are n the right, and then double down asking for the moon and telling everyone how wrong they are to suggest fixes though, so...

  • Please don't be that person that runs in here, didn't read the thing, and writes multiple paragraphs of stupidity. Just don't do it.

You're not "funding this guy's lifestyle" (love how you assume it's a guy). You're paying a person a less than fair wage when they can be getting twice the money elsewhere for the same role.

This person is taking a drastic pay cut to run things AS THEIR JOB. It's how they pay for things, and have kids, and a life. You're making the assumption they are somehow bilking money out of this, and that's not the case from that dollar amount.

You also didn't seem to understand that because it's a non-profit custodial arm of the project, that they are the ones keeping it alive for people like to bitch about this person making a salary ffs. Jeebus, some people, how dare they.

  • Depends on what that title actually means. Viewing it as a pie chart skews it so you don't realize that $170k in USD is pretty mediocre for a Director of Engineering role. If the project dies without this person, and that's what they need in salary to make it worth it to keep them there, then that's what they get paid.

It's not like they're even making an obscene amount of money ffs. That's a middling engineering salary, and this person is running the whole show. You should see what other "director" jobs at much shittier companies get paid. I think twice this amount would be a weak guess. If this person was a prick, they'd be milking that goat and taking all the free money.

This is an open source project backed by a non-profit foundation, granted, but this person is taking a massive pay cut just by working this job. Think about how that might impact their life to make that choice while trying to have a family.

$170k salary still won't you a fucking house in this country unless you live in the middle of nowhere, and this person is almost certainly in a major tech hub city, so that money means diddly when trying to pay the bills. It's barely above the poverty line in Silicon Valley after taxes for reference.

Everyone in here complaining because they make half this and think it's a lot of money because they live in Bumfuck, Idaho has no idea what it costs to live in the larger tech hubs around the world.
