  • Who do you think pockets the tariff? It would just be the government passing money from one hand to the other.

  • What? No, they stopped him all the time. They never hold him accountable, but they stopped all sorts of crazy shit.

  • The way its used in conservative circles in the 21st and late 20nd centuries does mean that they see the empathy as performative and either self serving or naive, not that they think the person simply cares too much. Up until about a decade ago they might have even seen empathy as a noble trait, as long as it was backed up by personal action.

  • Its not just that. Its refering to people expressing extreme performative empathy, backed up self serving or useless actions. There are liberal grifters out there, just like there are conservative ones, and the phrase is used to label a person as one of them.

  • I doubt he would actually be able to do it. Even if he had a solid case, Musk has the money to drag this through the courts until long after Trump is gone. However, Im pretty sure hell make a big show of the threat when they inevitably have their falling out.

  • No expropriation necessary. All hes got to do is knock out Tesla's subsidies and SpaceX's government contracts...maybe have the DOT and FAA take a reeaaal close look at their safety records just to put the final nail in their coffins. Trump is petty though, my bingo card say he also threatens to strip him of his citizenship and have him deported before this is all over.

  • Its the scale that is the issue. ICE has a total capacity of maybe 50k people. The entire US, federal government plus 50 states, has a combined prison capacity of less than 2 million people. And those facilities are already occupied now. Hes got to build new capacity for maybe 10 million people. Thats bigger than China's reeducation system. Its bigger than the Soviet gulags. Its bigger than the fucking Holocaust. Not just a little bit bigger, but bigger than all of those put together. And its got to be ready within 4 years, maybe 8 if he clings to power for a third term. His last administration couldn't even build the wall.

  • I didn't say there was anything new about it. People are, and always have been, capable of monstrous evil. It is normal human behavior, but that doesn't make it any less vile.

  • It would be easier to believe they think they are doing the right thing if they weren't so excited about all the people they want to hurt.

  • Oh no. If a fistfull of trillion dollar bills will buy you a shot glass of rice that maxed out credit card from the before time is pointless either way.

  • If were going to slip into a period of hyperinflation then taking on tons of consumer debt is just good financial planning.

  • Which takes us right back to the start. Embezzling money wont help hold that many people. The number were looking at is an order of magnitude greater than all people currently imprisoned in the US, which is already a huge number and major expense. Trying to come up with a camp system to hold people at that scale is just not the sort of logistical challenge that gets resolved within Trump's attention span.

  • I just cant imagine any of his lackeys being organized enough to build a camp network that can hold millions of people. My bet is they will will try to cram hundreds of thousands into camps that can only hold tens of thousands, fail, give up, then declare victory.

  • These sort of stories are important because they bother him personally. Once he knows that people think a particular underling is the real power behind the throne he inevitably dumps them. This constant churn of anyone who tried to take a lead helps keep his team in turmoil and minimizes the harm they can do to the rest of us.

  • That would only be ironic if they did it to the UK.

  • There's a good chance. However, without a central figure to rally behind those fascists will fall on each other like bbq covered zombies.

  • If he manages to implement absolutely none of his policy goals, it is plausible that the economy coasts along and does not fall off a cliff. But still that leaves everyone in the same spot. Hell be sitting there in 2028 having accomplished none of his stated policy goals after 8 years in office. His chances of getting off his ass and completing any of his talking points would not be improved.

  • It might not be a bad strategy. Trump is famously undisciplined and his lackeys are treacherous. The best chance for survival might very well be to sit back and let them fuck up. Last time around he didnt manage to build the wall or repeal the ACA, not because activists stopped him, but because his own allies couldn't stop tripping over their own feet. Without someone like McConnell to hand him finished packages to rubber stamp, he could go four more years spinning in circles without implementing much of anything.

And peaceful protest is a nonstarter. Hes itching to have people killed, and giving him four years to sift through the general staff to find officers willing to do it will make things much worse in 2028.
