  • The UN Peace Keeping Force is there for a number of things, but mainly to Keep the Peace.

They help citizens in a crisis, they monitor for illegal activity (including war crimes), and help with aid distribution. Their efforts are being hindered by the idf:

UNIFIL has said previous Israeli attacks on a watchtower, cameras, communications equipment and lighting had limited its monitoring abilities. U.N. sources say they fear any violations of international law in the conflict will be impossible to monitor.

  • I mean, little dude peaked at two months old as emperor of Russia, then was Man-in-the-Iron-Masked until his death, right at the moment of his release.

Russian or Greek, it's a freaking tragedy. I hope the guard that followed orders in killing him before he could be released was subsequently wrecked. Freaking bootlickers, man. They exist in every century.

  • I hate this. When I was first hired, I really poured in a lot of effort. I took on extra projects, did extra work, trying to get ahead. But every extra project I completed would get sent to a supervisor and manager, they would absolutely wreck it asking for changes that made little to no difference, but took a lot of time to implement. And then they would just.. keep requesting additional changes. for months. back and forth and back and forth.

I got so sick of it, I don't volunteer for fucking anything anymore. Oh, you want my input on this document you've changed as it affects how I do my job? Like I give a shit. Whatever I say will just get garbled and edited and ultimately you'll just do whatever the fuck you want anyway so.... No. I won't suggest any edits or redline your document. I don't care anymore. Just tell me what to do and I'll do it till my shift ends.

Just a bunch of middle managers who all want to look at fancy spreadsheets so they can appear to know what's happening on the manufacturing floor instead of, ya know, actually going down to the floor. Then they all can pretend to know what's going on to their higher up, who is in turn using that to pretend to know what's going on to their higher up, each one knowing less and less, until you get to the CEO or Site head that knows absolutely fuck all about what's going on, with even less of a clue on how to influence it, all because they don't want to actually visit the floor or talk to the poors running their machines.

I went from running my own business to this garbage, and although the steady middle class paycheck is nice, I regret it every day.

  • Upon the accession of Peter III in 1762, Ivan's situation seemed about to improve, for the new emperor visited him and sympathised with his plight, but Peter was deposed just a few months later. New instructions were sent to Ivan's guardian to place manacles on his charge, and even to scourge him should he become unmanageable.

Dang. Upon the doorstep of deliverance, a new emperor visiting your cell, empathizing with your position, only to have him deposed just as ruthlessly, and your situation made all the worse. How is this a real story and not some terrible ancient Greek tragedy?

  • I know that this movie will portray drumpf in a (rightfully) negative light, but even that isn't enough. I can barely stand this individual now, why on earth would I want to see him being portrayed by a handsome actor for an hour and a half or however long this movie is? I am sick of hearing him talk, I'm sick of people talking about him, I'm sick of hearing about him, I just want him to get locked away in a prison cell to rot away the rest of his intolerable existence.

I would need a movie to completely abandon portraying him in any light that could be construed as sympathetic or favorable. I would love to see a movie show drumpf in the same light that Inglorious Bastards portrayed hitler. Anything short of that is just giving this pathetic racist rapist more attention than he's worth.

  • It began in earnest in the early 1960s, when a group of scientists embarked on a mission to drill down from a floating barge, called Cuss I, to the border between the crust, the Earth’s outermost layer, and the mantle, the next and thickest layer. Project Mohole, as it was known, was recorded by the novelist and amateur oceanographer John Steinbeck in an article for Life magazine. “This is the opening move in a long-term plan of exploration of the unknown two-thirds of our planet that lies under the sea,” he wrote. “We know less about this area than we do about the moon.”

A scientific endeavor started over 60 years ago, that has been producing real invaluable scientific data to model our changing climate, is being axed.

The NSF attributed its decision to end its funding to rising costs and a lack of financial support from the International Ocean Discovery Program’s partners. But many see the expenditure for the ship as paltry compared with its benefits. To put it in perspective, the total NSF budget for 2023 was close to $10bn (£7.5bn); the $71m spent on the Joides is 0.7% of that.

For the amount of discovery we're getting from the Joides, the cost of running it seems paltry in comparison.

A bill proposed to the House in July asked the NSF to use $60m to continue operating the vessel for at least three missions next year.

    Hopefully this passes!

  • When I was a kid I did gymnastics, and skateboarded/rollerbladed. This combination of activities meant I was falling on my ass all the god damn time.

It also means that I am so accustomed to falling, that even as I age, those instincts survive, and in turn, help me survive. When I fall, I tuck, I roll, I break my fall with any number of instinctual responses. This has lead to me surviving some scary falls I've taken whilst home alone (off a ladder, in the shower, fainting once when I got up from a long squat), and I think will help me survive more in my elder years.

  • In August, the Fraternal Order of Police lodge that represents Chicago cops filed a lawsuit accusing Kersten and her top aides of leading dubious investigations and imposing unfairly harsh discipline on officers.

Later that month, Kersten fired two high-ranking COPA officials: Deputy Chief Administrator Matthew Haynam, a former CPD staff attorney, and Garrett Schaaf, one of several supervising investigators at COPA, who worked for years as a deputy sheriff in Osceola County, Florida.

Last month, Haynam filed a lawsuit claiming his firing was retaliation for raising alarms about COPA bias. A letter reportedly signed by 16 former or current COPA staffers said Kersten had “manipulated investigations to align with her own policy agenda” and retaliated against staffers who have complained about “bias and mismanagement.”

This sounds like an Onion article. Cops complaining to their oversight committee that their investigations are biased and unfair.

    Like, Ok, Coppers 🤡

“Transparency isn’t always comfortable,” Kersten added.

    I like this Andrea Kersten.

  • They definitely thought it was hilarious to keep drugs in that bag. However;

Officers on Tuesday night stopped a man and a woman driving a stolen car in Southeast Portland, and they found much more than a stolen car

They broke the most important rule. When breaking the law, only break one at a time. If you're gonna carry around your fun joke drug bag, don't do it while driving a stolen car.

  • Archbishop of Salzburg Franz Lackner described the show as “seriously offensive to believers’ religious feelings and convictions”.

    Oh no! Not your feelings!

“This is an opera about the breaking forth of the repressed female libido, so we decided to have a lot of fun," the 38-year-old dancer told The Guardian earlier this year.

    Here's a youtube trailer

  • She missed a grand opportunity to fence off the area, create a raccoon preserve, and charge people to feed them pellets of food she'll also sell them. Raccoons are adorable, she probably could have gotten enough money to fight the eventual lawsuit after one of'em bites a kid

  • Mr Martin, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, told the Dáil that “Israel is not listening to its allies in terms of progressing its agenda” and “seems to be [at] all out war”. He said the IDF’s actions were “unacceptable” with “destructive warfare” leading to community, health and education services being “destroyed”. He said Israel’s actions were “a clear breach of international humanitarian law”.

isreal fucking around a WHOLE LOT these days, pretty soon they're gonna find out.

  • I don't. I've since found out that it's a trauma response. When people want me in a sexual way, I feel obligated to acquiesce. Childhood PTSD gave me a heavy freeze/fawn response, because you gotta do whatever you can to survive, and once ingrained, it never really lets go. I've been working on it a lot though, and think after a few years of celibacy, I may be ready to start dating again! Just gonna have to take things slow, and be ready to say "No." But I believe in myself and that I am worthy of love! Self-Pep talk go!

  • You're probably right about it being closer to 150, I do remember turning my head and feeling the air push my head hard, fighting to get back into the lowered, hugging-the-engine position I was in. T'was nuts. never again! Maybe if I'm on the salt flats with mad protective gear, but not on roads, not on a new-to-me bike. That was just a flash of brilliant, youthful, death defiance that I'm likely never to repeat. Might as well bounce on a trampoline under whirring helicopter blades 😅
