  • I would really appreciate if people who actually enjoy content from those instances could share their thoughts here!

Well that's the trick, isn't it? They don't engage with the bot posts, if they were enjoying them then wouldn't they engage?

  • I remember lemmy.world got a bunch of heat for defederating from them pre-emptively, but it seems like it was a good call at this point.

Bad faith arguments and sealioning abound from their users and it seems the whole instance is just designed to encourage it.

  • Huh, I went looking for it just now and can't find it, so either I already blocked it or maybe lemmy.one already defederated from it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But yeah... bad administration needs defederation. Bad users need blocking/reporting.

lemmy.world got a bunch of heat from defederating from hexbear pre-emptively, but it seems like that was the right call. Then they got ddossed after defederating from pirate communities. Not saying that's CAUSATIVE, just "interesting". ;)

  • Blocking them on Voyager on Android works for me. :)

But I think it's reasonable to tell people to use the search to find communities that interest them, curate your home feed, and be aware that diving into the "All Federated Content" feed will show you stuff that's a) not particularly useful or b) potentially offensive to your sensibilities.

It took me way longer to get fed up with bot@lemmit.online than I'd really like to admit, and I only blocked them when it became clear they weren't going to stop. I could see other people enjoying the feed... but then why don't they comment? 🤔

  • Yeah, in that case, blocking multiple bots due to admin bad behavior, there's really no recourse.

  • Oh, I definitely see the argument, but I'd start by blocking everything by the bot, then if the admins decide to skirt the block with bot2@lemmit.online then the only real answer is defederation.

  • Repost bots are no better than spam bots IMHO, but I think defederation needs to be based on bad behavior by the admins, not the accounts themselves.

In the case of lemmit.online, yeah, they are creating a bunch of communities that ONLY the bot can post in, and the posts get no replies because what's the point in replying to TIFU or AITA if OP will never see it?

That's clearly the fault of the admin, but OTOH, blocking bot@lemmit.online solves the problem without full defederation.

There's a food community I read that gets spambots from lemm.ee all the time only posting affiliate links.

Those get reported for spam and blocked, but it's clearly not the policy of lemm.ee so no reason to defederate.

  • I had a problem with bot@lemmit.online just creating communities to copy paste from reddit and blocking all other submissions.

Blocking that one user cleaned up an awful lot of my feed without having to go community by community.

  • What's the resolution on the TV? I'd think you'd want at least 1080p for it to be effective.

  • Videocard Benchmark here:

    https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

Figure out your price point, then get the highest scoring card in that range.

Say for the sake of argument you don't want to spend more than $300 on a GPU:

GeForce RTX 3060 TI at $302 and change, not bad.

Radeon RX 6750 XT out performs it, but it's also $360 instead of 302. So are the extra 500 points on their performance scale worth $60? Probably not.

Prices are more of a guide, search around, you might find them for less. Just using the shopping tab at Google, I found the GeForce for $250 at NewEgg.

  • For people who say "the Bible says" I ask them to use only the Bible to answer a simple question.

"Which came first? People or animals?"

We know from the geologic record that animals came first. This is backed up by Genesis 1:20-26. Man and woman were created at the same time.

So why does Genesis 2 get it so wrong?

Adam is created first (Genesis 2:7), then animals (Genesis 2:19), then Eve (Genesis 2:22).

The reason for this is that early editors of the Bible combined TWO creation myths together. Genesis 1 is the Elohist tradition, Genesis 2 (no 7 day creation) is the Yahwist tradition.

Of course, they don't teach you that in Sunday school. ;)

  • The fascinating thing is that it very well be a real phenomenon that we don't fully understand.

Don't mistake me, it's definitely NOT spirits of the dead or infernal beings from the underworld.

But what it very well COULD be are things like infrasound or magnetic fields having a field day with our senses, making us see, hear and feel things that aren't there.

As with all of human history, things we don't comprehend get attributed to "spirits" and as we learn more, the belief in those things dies off.

Good reading on infrasound and ghosts here:

    https://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/extrasensory-perceptions/infrasound-paranormal-activity.htm

On the electromagnetism side, check out "The God Helmet" which can induce feelings of religious fervor.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7966009/

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_helmet

The big problem with this field of science is that "everybody knows" ghosts aren't real, so why study it?

  • The center pot I inherited when my grandmother passed away, she bought it on a trip to Spain in the 1950s.

The rest I bought one at a time through various sales at either the Le Creuset website or heavily discounted from their outlet store.
