I don't think so. There are very few communities that actually successfully fully left reddit. A good number of them splintered across circlejerkers on multiple lemmy instances with the users remaining on reddit asking "what's a lemmy" and staying put. The vast majority never left reddit at all, and don't give a fuck that reddit is trying to build a business.

Where the lemmy hivemind fails is that a bunch of us are reddit refugees that lost our favorite mobile apps, so you get a bunch of delusional people here thinking that reddit is dead and lemmy is the best thing ever. It's not. Lemmy has a lot of the same problems reddit had, and we're just repeating history. Wait until you need to squash extremism, prevent illegal content, and people maintaining the main instance (don't kid yourself, it's lemmy.world) need to eat.

Why don't the banks do this?

They get a cut of every transaction, and the more debt you accrue, the more money the bank makes if you carry a balance. They are financially disincentivized from protecting you from your spending.

It's exactly this. Netflix makes more money from the average basic+ads user than they do from someone on the standard plan. It's incremental revenue from all users that even occasionally use the service, and invisible to those that pay for Prime but don't care about Prime Video.

If you pay directly for Prime Video only, it's a little different.

Yeah, but they work until someone decides to fuck it up. Federation isn't the holy grail you think it is.

Admins (often a very very small group if not a single person managing an instance) still make unilateral decisions about federation and content or the very existence of that instance, and if your home instance suddenly defederates or goes poof, too bad, time to start over on a different instance with a new account with the exact same risks or maintain multiple accounts.

If this sounds familiar, it's awfully similar to what reddit did with their API by cutting off access points to content which is why most of us are here. Same shit, different shade of brown.

The same reason people aren't going for Lemmy.

Aside from the fact that the Fediverse is an incredibly confusing concept to the average user, those same users are entrenched and connected to everyone they already want to be connected to on the same platform. Until they are essentially forced to move, they'll stay on Twitter. The people on Lemmy and Mastodon right now are a tiny but vocal minority compared to the massive userbases of the platforms they abandoned.

He is. He's one of the most successful phone tech YouTubers. They do this because it's what gets clicks. Doesn't matter if you like it or hate it.

I sort by hot and there's no comment activity. I sort by active and it's the same posts for the entire day. Maybe you see improvement, but I see mostly a bunch of people yelling into the wind and a few groups huddled in the few interesting topics like this one, which is ironically bitching about reddit.

This. The whole circlejerk about how much better Lemmy is and how people are so glad they left reddit is getting really old, really fast. Meanwhile, any interesting post that would be normally spur fervent and meaningful discussion on reddit has maybe a dozen comments on Lemmy, most of them low effort. Heck, this exact same article on reddit's r/technology has 10x more comments and way more total engagement.

The spam and toxicity here are the same as on reddit with a different tone. Lemmy is just another echo chamber with a different coat of paint, and the only differences are a lack of ads and way less people and diversity to interact with.

The former moved to "workreform", at least on Reddit. The latter group are the dog walkers that stayed put.

Replace "reddit" with any free service. Welcome to the Internet.

And before you "ackshually Lemmy" me, someone is paying for it. Perhaps even you, if you've donated to your home instance.

Can't speak to that, unfortunately. But I assume there would be no issues. The devices themselves are system agnostic; Windows isn't doing anything special to make them play nice with each other.

Yeah, this is what my wife was doing. I'm also doing the reverse: AMD CPU, NVidia GPU. I considered AMD but went NVidia mostly for the PPW on an undervolted 4070. It results in a cool, quiet, low-wattage machine that can handle anything that matters to me, which AMD GPUs still can't match this gen even with the upcoming 7800XT they're trying to compare against the 4070. I'd wait for some PPW analysis before making a choice depending on your needs. There's way more to the analysis than GPU source code or even raw performance that is often overlooked.

Oh,and don't sleep on AMD. Though I don't feel like the AM5 platform is fully baked, Ryzen architecture is rock-solid and I fully recommend using it if your history with Athlon is what's keeping you away. I actively avoided them for the same reason until a friend convinced me otherwise, and I'm so glad I did.
