  • My parents use a brother AIO with Ubuntu, but it doesn't have a doc feeder so I can't speak to that. Zero complaints otherwise. Some more advanced mfps will allow you to scan to a shared folder as well.

  • Check out eaglemode

  • I hate everything about FedEx with a fiery passion.

  • Oh man, gnome3 on Linux with a functioning multi touch track pad is pure bliss my friend. Maybe not for drawing, but for REAL work I mean :P

Only a joke, if the engineers didn't need all that cloud storage I wouldn't have a job ;)

  • Yeah, I feel the same about Firefox OS, Ubuntu mobile, Web OS, and Meego. I wish we had a third option at least, that was a little more viable for people that have a handful of apps for widgets and stuff. At this point I think that any real contender is going to have to bake android compatibility in to hope to make a dent in the market at all. Too many normal people expect to be able to use their phone to control some gadgets they have bought, smart stuff and iot gear. Without rewriting all the various apps to control those gadgets people are going to be hesitant to try anything else going forward IMHO.

  • You cad guys always have ridiculous keyboard thoughts. I hate your entire setup to be honest, it looks like neck pain from looking around a too big monitor you are sitting too close to.

No personal hate, do what makes you happy. And I shouldn't be judging too much, I have my own ridiculous tastes when it comes to computer setups.

  • I ran sailfish on my 1+1 back in the day for a while. It was a nice OS but the app ecosystem was just horrible and their android compatibility just never worked right for me.

  • As someone who just started their container adventure by setting up rootless podman on arch, it wasn't terrible but I think I agree. I think I'm going to go check out some vanilla-ass docker until I can understand everything better.

  • I'm no expert, but as far as I can tell yes. It also seems a bit easier to have a rootless setup.

  • I did this about a decade ago for my parents. Upgraded their computer last year and they told me they wanted to keep Linux on the new machine.

My dad wasn't convinced until his hoyle card games ran with wine though.

  • I have over 200 hours in cyberpunk on Linux. The gog version is a little bit more work to setup the steam version. If you have it on steam, and have steam installed natively (not inside wine) it should work assuming you have the correct GPU drivers installed.

I've always had weird, buggy shit with Nvidias Linux drivers. AMD is pretty great though.

You could try an open source game like xonotic that supports Linux to test as well.

  • I have 20 years of Linux experience. I tell people 'I know a few things.'

Would never say I know everything or understand everything though.

Just like an xkcd comic I expect to see someone reply that has 30 years experience or something.

  • This is one of the few Zelda games I haven't completed yet. Someday.

    Congrats!

  • My problem is people saying Linux isn't ready because Nvidia provides a terrible experience, and they are basing that opinion on their personal experience with Nvidias gpu drivers. Using any other gpu provides an experience so close to the deck that it's not even a talking point.

No OS is perfect, Linux has problems, but Nvidia makes people think it's a mess.

  • My company shoots for 5 year life on desktops, 3 on laptops. At that mark we evaluate if the machine is still supported and doing the job it needs to do.

If either of those things are not true then we replace the unit.

Smaller companies that I have worked for tried to stretch most hardware to double that, but it was always a bad idea imo.

  • Windows upgrades from one version to the other are also a hot mess, so I don't think that's a knock against Linux. I just think everyone sucks at in place upgrades, maybe not Mac but I have little experience there.

I'd much rather reinstall windows fresh than upgrade a 7 machine to 10 to be on a supported OS. Going from 10 to 11 uninstalled most of my apps and still resulted in a janky system.

Rolling distros don't have this same problem because there aren't really versions but they have a whole bunch of new and different problems. I still prefer rolling for personal systems though.

  • My AMD desktop provides an almost identical user experience to the deck, just with more power. The problem isn't Linux, it's Nvidia not making a driver that actually works. Nvidia has always been hostile to gaming on Linux, desktop Linux users in general.

You can install any OS on the deck, it's commodity hardware shoved into a handheld. Not a locked down device like a console.

I've built all my desktops and none of them ran Linux poorly, played lots of games. I've been gaming on Linux since my only option was unreal tournament.

Anti cheat is a show stopper for many Linux games though, if you are big into multiplayer games you might be disappointed to find out your favorite game blocks Linux users because reasons. Games outside of steam will require more work to get running, because steam does the heavy lifting for you.

There are also other edge cases where it doesn't work great, like with CAD software. But Nvidia making garbage tier drivers has done more harm to the perception of Linux gaming than everything else combined.

One thing that people seem to dismiss, running windows games on Linux is fuckin magic. It's not normal for an OS to be able to run another systems applications.

  • Agree to disagree I guess. I've tried changing the workflow in KDE to even resemble gnome and it just feels like you have to have a start menu with a taskbar. Sure, you could put that taskbar anywhere but it still operates the same as a windows 98 taskbar.

Maybe I'm just not used to the KDE way of doing things but next year will be my 20th anniversary of using Linux. I've tried every desktop environment and window manager. All of them.

I respect the KDE project but KDE makes me feel like I'm using a windows gui on top of Linux.

  • If you aren't using the super key to access that menu you are using gnome wrong imo. Three finger swipe on track pad is also a great way to access the same menu.

KDE is fuckin fantastic, but it aims to replicate the windows ui and workflow. If that's what you want then I highly recommend it over gnome. But personally I don't think that desktop UX should be stuck in the early 2000s Redmond style. Once I changed my habits to use my windows button on the keyboard instead of moving my mouse all over hell to access the menu it's all I ever use. Mouse is just a fallback when the other hand is busy. I try every new KDE version because I kind of hate how the gnome devs act sometimes, but I can't get used to that workflow anymore.

    I hope cosmic is great.

  • I subscribed to this channel for Linux news, not furry pics. I block furry communities because I don't want to see this stuff, ever. I surely don't want it to come through my 'subscribed' feed that I feel safe scrolling through at work. It's just not the right community to post this imo. There are literally dozens of places for this content elsewhere on the fediverse let alone the rest of the net.

People wonder why Lemmy isn't catching on with the general population but this is a prime example of why Lemmy feels kinda jank. I shouldn't have to worry about weird fetishy cartoons on my tech community.
