Huh, that's my complaint with the latest AdGuard - now it seems to just... go away... on my phone pretty frequently. The older version didn't ever stop unless I stopped it. I paid for a lifetime on my current phone, but when I get a new one I'll be checking out the free options before paying yearly for AdGuard.
Hmm, I actually disagree that extremists should only be those who want to go outside the system and use violence. I would also find trying to effectively and knowingly go against the 1st amendment extreme too. I think that extremists also need to be kind of at the... extremes of a political spectrum also. In fact, I do find it useful (maybe we need a different term) for a way to talk about if someone is in a very edge AND niche position of their group.
I'm not sure that's true - I mean, presumably some things have to happen for the position or else why have it? I guess in terms of being in a group of legislators that's less true, but town supervisor or dogcatcher or whatever - I'd get elected once, then when there's no one at the meetings or doing whatever needs to be done to IDK, plow the roads or something or no one answers a call to catch a dog - I'd not get elected again, so have I accomplished anything doing that? And I don't like to claim I'll do something and then just never do it, it's even worse to go in knowing I'm never going to do it, but I'd prefer no one to a Republican. Plus, then I become a public individual and lose a lot of privacy rights and am liable to get attack ads etc, even if I'm actually just a "straw candidate" to have a D on the ballot.
Indeed, this is the major problem on the left. It's why there's so much interest online in centrist "anti-woke" discussions and podcasts. But it's also fertile recruiting ground for the far right - if you're excommunicated for the 2% difference and actually, effectively canceled (I mean like a twitter mob actually gets you fired or the like), you're more inclined to go where people support you, and all too often, that's now the far right.
Identitarinasm doesn't lead anywhere good IMO on either side, and we would do well to re-think that on the "loud" part of the left.
Yes, so far at least the Democrats seem to be far less tolerant of extremists in politics. Maybe that's untrue - but they tend to not be violent or wanting to overthrow the system. Part of it is how you define extremists - I'm more tolerant of people who want to campaign and try to make most any change via the democratic process via voting no matter their position. I'm less interested in those who feel we should invade the capital to try and overrule the outcomes of elections or violently intimidate opponents.
I wish there were non republicans running. Usually there's one person running, and they're generally republican. And no - I don't have the time to become a politician.
Unlike many other sports, I honestly don't see how chess is impacted by gender, nor why we'd have different leagues other than legacy historical strangeness. If I were king for a day, I'd just get rid of gendered leagues for chess. Everyone plays in an open league.
I tend to prefer the GPL because I don't know what good "source available" does for anyone beyond an audit. If I want to have someone fix a bug - I probably can't with "source available", and the overhead in figuring out if something is a use not liked by the vendor is an unnecessary headache for me.
So... in this case, for me I'd treat a no-commercial use, source available, as functionally the same as a proprietary license like Microsofts.
Not weird. I generally hate videos for stuff that I just need some basic reference on. Where I find them useful is for visual stuff (obviously) that I'm less familiar with. For instance, if I need to twiddle with Windows Server 2022 to do something, I find text by far the best, because I do not need to see how to click on the start menu.
If I need to replace the AVR on a portable generator, the video is very helpful.
I personally think that needs some definition and study. People are less interested in being bored because they can avoid it. It really depends on what's going on and what the task is. If I'm standing in line, it's not a lack of attention being on my phone. It's a lack of interest in being immersed in staring at the floor waiting in line. If I'm in a meeting of someone talking to hear their own voice, I'm going to look at my e-mail. I guess in the past I zoned out, but neither is indicative of my attention span.
I always see these things not making a distinction on whether someone is actually trying to pay attention or not. I'm also kind of less sure that attention is trained - that your kids attention span is primarily set by whether they watch TikTok vs full Disney movies. This seems like a bit of a facile comparison.
For instance, if I'm actively working on something, I can pay attention to it for at least a few hours. It's just that I'm often blocked, waiting on another person or process to complete. Or I'm actively responding to e-mails, which again looks like blipping from task to task, but really isn't. Of course, I'm not a kid, but I recall all the "soundbites rather than analysis" from the 90s when I was a teen.
I'm going to point to a large number of 2 hour + Youtube videos. I can't tell you who's watching them, or if more people are, but there wasn't anything like that 25 years ago. I'll also point to podcasts and the plethora of 3-6 hour or more - isn't Joe Rogan's like 8 hours long? And it's one of the most popular ones.
There's more novels today than ever before, and people reading via Kindle Unlimited and just up and buying them.
Prestige TV is often 60 minutes or 90 minutes, in comparison to 42 being a "normal hour long broadcast show".
There's more kinds of content, but I disagree that the length of consumed media in general is getting shorter and shorter.
I could see boycotting publishers but I don't think the book binders review content on the print on demand, and that seems like a pretty big new ask for them.
Everyone already knows the ways that Amazon sucks, somehow I doubt that one niche publisher selling on there is going to make a difference.
I am also not sure what you mean by "held accountable". I don't think they are breaking any laws in the publishing aspect.
Maybe the UK is very different from the US but I find I use cash more now than I used to since I got into buying used items from private parties. This includes cars, farm equipment, mowers, camera equipment / lenses, and more. If you're at auctions you get a discount for paying cash (which honestly I think is a bit of a scam, but there it is), same for buying gas at a gas station. If you're at a swap meet or the like, or a yard sale - no one is setting up a square account or something, nor do they want to deal with your paypal or venmo or whatever. They want you to give them $10 or whatever and take the used item.
So - some of this I'm sure is the limits of the US banking system, but also no one wants to need to do extra IRS paperwork for a one time sale of something. Yes, a lot of it is "dodging taxes", but I also see the other side - if I'm selling my old books and that bike I haven't used in a decade in a once a year or less yardsale - it's a little ridiculous to need to do sales and income taxes on each $2-$50 item that would be required with digital payments.
Well. I rarely use cash in stores or restaurants, but I also see it for local chicken BBQs or little town fairs - the local legion or whatever doesn't have a portable card machine...
For the number of ships, by TOS there are only 12 Constitution class ships, so there might not be more ships to send. We're a year or so out from the Klingon war, and it doesn't seem like the Federation is in a position to quickly replace ships. They already lost the Cayuga. Also the admiralty obviously isn't interested in a Gorn war at all, and certainly not over this planet or the potential survivors.
I will say it's been shown that Pike is just not a fighting captain. He's not the person you want in a combat situation. It does make me wonder why he's a Captain but idk. They really should send the Enterprise back on a deep space mission of exploration and have someone (who is not an evil mirror universe person) more like Lorca or Kirk running these border conflicts or something.
