  • Oh, I knew I heard Mexico had a major reason for that name to stick; thanks for posting!

  • In a statement, the Army said they warned Trump staffers about federal laws that prohibit any partisan activity on Army installations. NPR reported that one cemetery staffer was pushed aside when she attempted to stop the Trump campaign from filming during their visit on August 26.

This is a man who is unable to comprehend anything other than service to himself,” she wrote.

“Our kids were murdered because of your administration, and you are partly to blame,” Jaclyn Schmitz, mother of late Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, said in one clip.

Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover’s father Darin Hoover shared that his family “asked the Trump team to take the videos” and that the event was “solemn” and respectful.

  • Amid a growing partnership between China and Russia, Mandarin has been growing in popularity across Russia as a foreign language of choice, a trend Putin said was due to developing contacts across economics, politics and society.

Putin, who speaks fluent German but has also taken lessons to improve his English, said that pupils should not forget the importance of English.

Russian, English, Tatar, German and Chechen are the most widely spoken languages in Russia, according to the 2022 census. While Mandarin is spoken far less, it has been growing swiftly in popularity in recent years as a foreign language.

English is the world's most spoken language with about 1.5 billion speakers, followed by Mandarin Chinese with about 1.1 billion speakers, and then Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, French, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian and Urdu, according to Ethnologue, a language research centre.

  • When Donald Trump made his semi-triumphant return to Twitter/X, his opening tweet posed a very Reagan-esque question to the online masses: “Are you better off now than when I was president?”

Trump’s message was no accident. The rest of the tweet mentioned only two issues, the economy and immigration, but the economy came first, and for good reason. Not only do voters consistently rate it as their most important concern in the 2024 presidential race (and often select inflation as the second-most important when that's offered as a separate category), but Trump holds a significant lead when respondents are asked about the subject.

After the historic surge of energy, fundraising and viral memes that Harris’ nomination has generated, that same gap is down to … nine points. The most recent Bloomberg/Morning Consult results give Trump an eight-point edge on the question, while the New York Times/Siena College swing-state survey puts the figure at 12 points, the same number found by CNBC.

In other words, regardless of whatever economic statistics Harris or Biden or any other Democrat might throw out there, CNBC’s records strongly imply that no amount of attempted persuasion will convince voters that they feel better about the economy now than they did during the Trump administration — because, well, they don’t. It’s not even close. A nugget from yet another survey, the Swing State Project’s Battleground Poll, further illustrates the problem Harris faces: According to the August results, 57% of those asked about inflation felt that it was getting worse, more than double the 25% who felt it was getting better. This is despite the fact that, officially, inflation has been trending downward since July of 2022.

The Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates not once, not twice but three times before the end of the year.

Remember, the 2020 election was ultimately decided by roughly 44,000 votes in three states. This year’s election will also, in all likelihood, be decided by a tiny handful of votes in a small number of states. If voters in those states are thinking about the economy when casting their ballots, Trump will win. If Harris can get them to think about virtually anything else (other than immigration), she’ll win.

  • I agree.

Economy is always a top issue for working class.

  • IIRC: Data has not been overwritten yet; it is just shown to be open to being rewritten.

It can still be recovered with minimal corruption if the device was not used too much, where open storage would be eriten over.

  • Please don't impersonate admins.

    What are you on about...

I responded as a user; they informed the users of this as well, not just admins. I thanked the poster for sharing issues noticed, which should be applauded.

Some of us users like to know as well, so we can point out our experiences and where we noticed similar issues, as I did in other comments.

  • This is not exclusive to c/vegan; other communities have similar issues you have brought up; they have also been called out by a few, but c/vegan is getting the most traction.

It goes back to user, mod, and admin control over their communities.

This post seems to address the overpolicing conflict.

  • You missed the point of the post.

This goes beyond the c/vegan issue; it is addressing systematic lemmy issues between admins, moderators, and users.

  • Feel free to continue to think that way, but I will continue to disagree.

    Dissidence =/= troll

  • Harris’s energy, eloquence and competence are fundamentally a relief when compared with the discomfort of watching Biden speak.

This means nothing; we had Obama; he was a warmonger like the rest.

People seem to keep forgetting the past or choose to ignore it and continue another cycle of the status quo.

There are some Democrats who appear unconcerned by the slaughter in Gaza – see for example the delegates who blocked their ears, laughed and rolled their eyes as protesters outside the DNC venue read aloud the names of Palestinian children killed. But those who are more compassionate, or more cynically aware of the risks of turning away from the horrors of the war, are beginning to share this sense of cognitive dissonance. Harris’s energy, eloquence and competence are fundamentally a relief when compared with the discomfort of watching Biden speak. We see the competent woman instead of the apparently confused old man and the irrational, hopeful part of our brains tend to think things will be fine. But Harris – lesser of two evils as she may be in some pertinent senses compared to Trump – is not fine, will never be fine until she at least commits to ending US funding of Israel’s war.

  • Thanks, here is more information about Crikey:

Crikey is an independent Australian source for news, investigations, analysis and opinion focusing on politics, media, economics, health, international affairs, the climate, business, society and culture. We are guided by a deceptively simple, old idea: tell the truth and shame the devil.

  • I don't agree with your smears.

I posted the possible source that started this.

    Thanks for the chat though.

  • It could be that the moderators left or got deleted, but I am not sure how that works.

Others that know more about that process could chime in to inform us. Here's hoping!

  • Edit: wording, added more information

Other communities, including some conservative ones, also don't have mods.

    Thanks for letting us know!

I wonder if they delete the community or appoint a new moderator, even if I some are keeping them active.

  • Joining in the lemmy circle jerk of name calling anyone that does not align to your thinking, nice.

  • Was this the article that started it? Do you have the thread or would an archived link be required to see it?

Vegan versus meat-based cat food: Guardian-reported health outcomes in 1,369 cats, after controlling for feline demographic factors [Andrew Knight, Alexander Bauer, Hazel Brown | Published: September 13, 2023]^[[1] https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0284132]

    Abstract

Increasing concerns about environmental sustainability, farmed animal welfare and competition for traditional protein sources, are driving considerable development of alternative pet foods. These include raw meat diets, in vitro meat products, and diets based on novel protein sources including terrestrial plants, insects, yeast, fungi and potentially seaweed. To study health outcomes in cats fed vegan diets compared to those fed meat, we surveyed 1,418 cat guardians, asking about one cat living with them, for at least one year. Among 1,380 respondents involved in cat diet decision-making, health and nutrition was the factor considered most important. 1,369 respondents provided information relating to a single cat fed a meat-based (1,242–91%) or vegan (127–9%) diet for at least a year. We examined seven general indicators of illness. After controlling for age, sex, neutering status and primary location via regression models, the following risk reductions were associated with a vegan diet for average cats: increased veterinary visits– 7.3% reduction, medication use– 14.9% reduction, progression onto therapeutic diet– 54.7% reduction, reported veterinary assessment of being unwell– 3.6% reduction, reported veterinary assessment of more severe illness– 7.6% reduction, guardian opinion of more severe illness– 22.8% reduction. Additionally, the number of health disorders per unwell cat decreased by 15.5%. No reductions were statistically significant. We also examined the prevalence of 22 specific health disorders, using reported veterinary assessments. Forty two percent of cats fed meat, and 37% of those fed vegan diets suffered from at least one disorder. Of these 22 disorders, 15 were most common in cats fed meat, and seven in cats fed vegan diets. Only one difference was statistically significant. Considering these results overall, cats fed vegan diets tended to be healthier than cats fed meat-based diets. This trend was clear and consistent. These results largely concur with previous, similar studies.
