This is the classic size vs purity argument. Would it be better to have a large fediverse with corporate input or a small one without?

Comparing mere assholes to Nazis is antisemitic, much less comparing anyone who disagrees with you to Nazis.

The word "Nazi" and especially "fascist" have been diluted into "bigot" at best and "person I disagree with" at worst. The right are just as bad with "communist" and "socialist", although with the difference that socialism is a perfectly decent ideology, and even communism isn't as bad as fascism.

mastodon.world has decided not to, so I don't think we will.

People are worried that they'll embrace, extend and extinguish it. That is, join the fediverse, make Threads a better client than any of the existing ones until everyone uses their client, then use that extra reach to harm the fediverse.

I'm personally not that worried, because of who we are. We're a bunch of geeks with anarchist leanings, and so probably wouldn't switch to Threads anyway.

It's all getting a bit Judean People's Front around here. I know there's a generally leftist userbase, but do we have to do this?

That's less about defederating with Meta. Meta are the Romans. It's about people defederating with anyone who federates with Meta.

It's like people are forgetting that piracy is actually illegal.

Lemmy.world isn't preemptively defederating with Threads.

I'd like to disagree with OP, but a lot of us did join after Reddit fucked up.

Ok, imagine if Reddit had been part of the fediverse in the way Threads is planning to be. Then, when spez needed to fuck himself, we could have migrated more easily to another instance, without losing access to Reddit.

I'm not sure about you, but that sounds like an upside to me.

No, it really doesn't. It's a kludge to allow hostile humour against people you don't like, while protecting those you do, all while claiming impartiality.

I don't trust them one bit, but this makes more sense than EEE. The fediverse just isn't that big. We don't have anything they want. But what they do want is to be allowed to launch Threads in the EU without DMA issues.

Truth Social has enough screenshots going round that anything I made using the same frontend would look like it was Truth Social, and I don't want to do that.
