What's left of them are writing 6 stories a day, every day, so no, there's no time left for the old due diligence.
I'm expecting FB to make some sort of proprietary fork of ActivityPub. I'm not quite sure what the point of Threads is, from Zuck's POV, excluding the desire to eat Musks's lunch, which is huge, so that's more than enough. The man needs a win, bad, after that Metaverse flop heard round the world.
But everything you'd consider an advantage to the Fediverse is a downside to his business model, and the things it enables, like user-controlled hosting, don't suit his ends. Maybe he intends to colonize this place, too, but up until very recently there wasn't a meaningful user base to gain control over. Still isn't. Mastodon got the biggest boost, they're up to 8 mil users now, a healthy number for sure, but Instagram is pushing a billion users, so the number isn't much to him.
So he's not going to actually like anything about the Fediverse, or what it offers, nor will he like its downsides much. ActivityPub, as it is, doesn't do him any favors. I can't imagine anything other than the skeleton of ActivityPub getting repurposed into something else that runs Threads in the locked down way that Meta is accustomed to. He just seems to be grabbing at anything that's loose for the taking.
Well, it looks like a W for Zuck, I just hope it's not doom for the Fediverse, somehow. I don't really care if the Twitter exodus goes elsewhere, they've already been stepping on the flowers pretty hard at Mastodon, I just don't want to be somehow annexed by Facebook.

Shit, my man, ever since Craftsman stopped really being Craftsman, all bets are off.
In case anyone is curious, the Lifetime Warranty on Craftsman hand tools is still in effect. You need to walk into a Lowe's with your broken ratchet, now, but they'll still swap you another one for free. It just hurts a little trading in your 20-year-old Craftsman ratchet, which is lighter, better built, and shows attention to detail, for a lump of Chinesium that's just bluntly stamped also-ran stuff. Definitely a downgrade. But the warranty is still there, so that's something.
Now, shit, who knows? My stuff is still mostly Craftsman, but stuff has been replaced with lesser brands as it fails or gets lost, it's whatever, now, for hand tools.
I've heard good things about Makita, lately. Make sure you follow TorqueTestChannel on Youtube for the real man news, they've got a whole setup for testing power tools to see if they're worth the price.
There are few greater pleasures than clocking out right as the shit hits the fan. Nice dinner rush you've got there, have fun with that.
I think the thing that's really stopping me from using that is that every time I get curious and go poking around to see what the fuss is, I run into some sort of paywall situation, or maybe it's just a long queue that you need to join to get access, something like that. All I know is that you can't just casually fire it up and take it for a spin.
Either I'm finding the wrong thing, or the people who already swear by it paid some fee or got an early access code ages ago. It also doesn't know when it's lying, and already got a lawyer in trouble for trying to let ChatGPT do his job, apparently it slapped together a brief, an argument before the court, that referenced a bunch of case law that didn't actually exist.
No matter what, it's not so casually accessible as people make it out to be, I don't know what's up with that.
That dead woman called Tumblr is still walking with a healthy strut these days, also soaking up some displaced Redditors. Horny shit is slowly but surely returning to Tumblr's fields, as well.
Tumblr illustrates the problem with porn in general, they didn't shut it down for no reason, they shut it down because the pedos had decided to use it as a dissemination portal for their vile shit, and the structure of Tumblr made it difficult to moderate away, especially at scale. Thus, Apple threatening to pull them from the app store, for good reason. All they could do was go scorched earth on porno.
So that's the issue we're going to have, here, and I'm not sure if the "some guy running an instance for the fuck of it" model is prepared for it.
Thanks to their test performance, I'm slowly saving up for a Makita electric impact I don't need that badly, so hopefully the quality stays up. $5 in the piggy bank every couple weeks doesn't buy impact wrenches very fast.
