  • If you'd maybe like to donate: here's the link. They do things like making learning computing available to people that can't do it otherwise. Anyone can sign up for the public UNIX, which means potentially thousands of people can learn how to operate FOSS (Free and Open Source Software)

  • Count me in as well. I know the spirit of SDF is being a truly public computer, but on such a public computer they have made this instance, which has been defamed. There are those of us that really believe in the the educational etc. benefits that the non-profit brings are worth more than the defamation that this instance may bring. To be clear, unpaid admins can have an incentive to go rogue. I would be willing to put in effort for very little, but still paid, which at least would publicly declare that I have incentive and encouragement to curate this instance in a way that the community will actually care about.

  • The content here can best be described as a love of computers, helping people (amputees and people restricted from government sites because they use TOR), and I guess and art collective. There is alot of OC art that makes it here.

  • At least the admins seem awake now. I've really bothered them in every way I can. 1 hour is wayyy better than more than a day. And if it happens, I don't think any of us would be mad. The content here is very specific to us.

  • This is a brilliant idea. It keeps the instance to the people that use the service as well as weeds out trolls. I'm not sure how feasible it is, but if anyone can, I'm sure that people that have kept a system alive since 1987 can.

  • We need sign up barriers at the least. As well as community creation barriers. I'm at the point where I'm willing to be the one to be rude on Mastodon.

  • I'm sorry to reply once again, but it seems we have legitimately woken up the need for an admin account here. The troll is banned once again.

  • I'm just nuking posts for the time being. New mods needed at linux_video_editing

  • You have a very real point here. The only community that I mod here is linux_video_editing. I'm just deeply upset and having a hard time finding reason. If anyone is willing to just moderate that, never post, please make a comment there.

  • Yeah, accurate and correct are different ideas, though. If they don't do drastic things, they may even face legal stuff soon.

Editing to add: that 2tb of space is going to go bye bye quickly as well.

  • The name of a non-profit that I truly believe in is just going to shit. The reason of banning a nazi troll that we warned you had alts as "userbase request" is at most disgusting. I was here making stuff because I believe in what you do as an org.

That being said, STOP SPINNING UP INSTANCES YOU ARE NOT WILLING OR CAPABLE OF MANAGING

  • Yeah, in this case it was a woman posting a picture of her shiba inu that lead to the downfall if the US government.

  • That's just tangentially related.

  • We have used both Mastodon and the BBS to reach out as well. I will be back at my PC tonight and can do much more like using the internal chat on the pubunix box.

Editing to add: It isn't just this one incident. They have been doing the sysadmin side of things, but not doing the community admin side of things. The last we saw of the admin account was 1.6 years ago.

  • If they leave this alone, it could destroy the reputation of the non-profit that does cool things. I have to disagree here. People just blocking is not enough. They need to ban this troll or kill the instance to save face. That's the way I see it.

  • Unfortunately, the reason I like SDF is the culture we have here. It isn't something that will ever just be replicated.

  • Well, I just did what I can from mobile. I can't connect.

  • What is the info? I can't get it to display from the site.
