Weird that we never consider that for retail workers though…

The best part is that they got us fighting each other so much. They’ve managed to divide us across whatever line you can think of.

All of this is a distraction. While racism and sexism absolutely exist, they fortunately aren’t the cornerstones of our hierarchies anymore. Thats great, but now we have a caste system, and nobody wants to acknowledge it.

I mean, at the low level, sure. “Bart Simpson”, the concept, was created by a person. Bart Simpson, the character, was developed and built as a collaborative effort of several people spanning the course of decades, and continues to be developed by teams of people.

The copyright shouldn’t belong to an individual. The rights to the intellectual property need to be protected, but so too do the rights of everyone who contributed to building it.

Unfortunately, corporations are really the closest proxy we really have.

Thats what’s really exciting about new media, and small time collaborators, and niche content. HomeStar Runner doesn’t belong to Disney, or Fox, or Viacom. He belongs to the small group of people who created him and his friends. The same could be said for Kurzgesagt, or The Lockpicking Lawyer, or both the Nostalgia and Angry Video Game nerds.

Just for curiosity, how do you find Kobos selection compared to Libby/Overdrive (or similar), if that’s an option in your area?

I really can’t be happier with either, for audiobooks or ebooks, considering their price (free, through your public library). Drawback being that selections are limited depending on your library (but you can be linked to several, and you may be eligible for several…here in Massachusetts, anybody in the state is eligible for BPL plus the regional networks and colleges (I.e. COFAN). And there are libraries in other states that accept patrons from anywhere. And you can be on multiple waitlists

But, the limiting selection or not being able to get instant access when you want to scratch that itch. I bought my wife and I kindles on Prime day. Those each came with free Kindle Unlimited months. And then there’s Prime Reading as a benefit of being a prime member.

But, while I like ebooks, my wife greatly prefers audiobooks (she’s at 140-something for the year, and rarely uses her kindle because the phone is way more convenient for audiobooks. That’s entirely through Libby, but she’s also counting the Harry Potter books on her friends Audible account that we’ve been listening to with the kids). And the audiobook selection on kindle unlimited is terrible and clunky…they really want to push you to Audible. Though I do really like being able to toggle between reading and book in the same app. But while I do enjoy the occasional sales (been on waitlist for months for “To sleep in a sea of stars”, and then found it on prime sale for 99¢ or something), I can’t justify a “subscription” to “own” an ebook.

Would love a service that had a good selection of ebooks and audiobooks, and compatible with kindle and IOS

Yep. Really miss Apollo. Wefwef is a good replacement but nowhere near as polished. Haven’t looked at new apps in a while though.

I’m getting my doomscrolling and worthless banter/arguing with strangers “fix” from lemmy.

But Lemmy is no replacement for local news/rumormill, or most career/hobby subs, yet. Except for at a very high level. Like metro area, or “gaming”. Reddit is still far superior only because theres already a community there.

Eventually Lemmy may get to that point. Time will tell. I still haven’t installed the Reddit app, and I basically only end up there when some other search brings me to Reddit. I’ve already stopped muscle-memory impulsively typing it. My autocomplete for www.red is no longer safe-for-work.

You can’t really go anywhere on the internet without using Google in some capacity. Cookies and trackers in all the things. Ads aplenty, and blocking them is perpetually an arms race.

Washington was elected in 1788 and re-elected in 1792. However both were unanimous, unopposed, and done solely by the electoral college. Adams/Jefferson in 1796 was the first proper election, after Washington set the 2-term precedent and relinquished power. That precedent was maintained until FDR served four terms during the First World War sequel, which led to the drafting of the 22nd Amendment to the US constitution limiting presidents to two terms in 1947. It was ratified by 36 of the 48 states in 1951.

The real ironic thing is, the doctors that are publishing papers saying screentime is bad are the same people who plopped us in front of Nintendo and Nickelodeon because stranger danger (and that, even more ironically, because of prime time news magazines like Dateline and 20/20 and Current Affair)).

Shocker, stranger danger kids are using the TV more in raising their kids.

I honesty think “screen-time” is overblown. Screens are tools and while creative old-fashioned play is very important, screens play an important role, too.

I’ve got two kids, 4 and 7. I differentiate between games (as long as they are age-appropriate or maybe a little older for them), “good-tv” (age appropriate educational shows or shows with “lessons” I.e Curious George, Daniel Tiger, Odd Squad, etc), “great-tv” (purely educational shows like Nova or How It’s Made…my oldest loves both), and “junk food tv” (SpongeBob, Gumball, etc).

They all have their place and none are “bad” as long as moderation is applied and content is age-appropriate.

My mistake, then. I haven’t really used Ubuntu much since focal. I was going off the package list in distrowatch.

I don’t usually “trust” vendor support for Linux though…Linux is usually a second-class citizen and “support” means there is either a single grey-beard or an intern that’s answering emails about it. Idk about StudioOne, but unfortunately it’s usually expected to not have feature parity or complete documentation for commercial software on Linux. IME, YMMV, etc.

Ubuntu LTS and 23.x are both Xorg. Latest has Wayland. If 24.04 is to be LTS though, I don’t think they’d release it with Wayland as default. I’d think they’d switch to Wayland on 24.10 so there’s 3 more releases to get good before the next LTS build.

There’s other factors than just brushing your teeth but brushing is probably the easiest factor that most people can reasonably take control of.

Genetics, obviously you can’t do much about. But you can avoid sweets and decide not to get pregnant (hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause mouths to get more acidic and make plaque harder to remove, and can also soften the gums and bones that hold teeth in, or even weaken the teeth directly). Also, if you want nice teeth, it’s especially important to abstain from smoking crystal meth. And that’s even more important during pregnancy.

But telling everybody “brush twice a day for two minutes” is a small ask with huge returns.

Guidance for preschools around me is for them to brush kids teeth after every meal that’s served at school.

That was recently reinstated after being suspended for a couple years and the teachers are practically (as much as they legally can) begging the parents to sign the waivers to opt their kids out of it. I don’t blame them. It seems excessive and it’d take a ton of time for two teachers to scrub a dozen or so sets of toddler teeth, while also controlling said toddlers while they wait for everyone to finish.

You are correct. As a typical American, I had forgotten that the rest of the world existed.

Although it’s worth mentioning that on a global stage, American “liberal” isn’t saying much. Both our major parties are pretty conservative, our “conservative” party just says the quiet parts out loud and copies their agenda out of ancient poetry.
