Self-checkout theft causing problems for retailers — and shoppers who despise receipt checks

  • How far in the past? I'm sure I remember unionized cashiers at, I think, Safeway getting paid comparable to me as a unionized welder in the late 1970s or early 1980s. I could be completely wrong about that, because I think it was the whole store on strike, not just the cashiers.

  • Yes, I see that I didn't follow the chain of causality far enough back. I think you are correct in that it's a federal funding issue.

    So what happens now? Do we leave these people to rot in the streets while fighting for funding or find a way to shelter them while fighting for funding?

  • I don't understand what's so complicated about "act first, sort out funding later." It took years of court cases to sort it out for Indigenous health care and that was the conclusion. With that concept formalized in one area of jurisdictional conflict, it shouldn't be rocket science to just go ahead and apply it in others.

  • Sort of. I think of the Unix philosophy as being like Lego. Here's a box of goodies, go crazy. Even Ikea still requires user assembly.

    Most end users just can't do much with the first and often even get tripped up by the second. What we need is something in between that a programmer can use to quickly throw something together to user requirements.

    Actually, that's much like what I was doing with Microsoft Access and Visual Basic decades ago. I probably would never have survived in an actual software development shop, but I was kept very busy by a bunch of small businesses that loved the quick turnaround and manageable costs.

  • I'm not exactly a Reddit refugee, since I've been using a variety of decentralized communications systems for a while. I even still make small use of Usenet! That said, now seems like a good time to get signed up on a lemmy instance with my "real" username.

    I chose this instance for several reasons. It seems like a solid and sane instance (from my perspective!). It helps keep the load off of the "main" instance (which load would be less if someone put some effort into not making it seem like the obvious place to sign up). Last but not least, hello from Southern Saskatchewan!
