  • Better than the gas that Russia is using illegally that causes serious pain and often takes a long time to die painfully from.

  • Point isn't whether it's right or not. The point is that once the supreme court rules, there's no "higher" court to take it to. The lower courts can't rule differently on something explicitly ruled on already, and they can't "overrule" the supreme court since they are explicitly "under" them. So regardless of what Starlink says, they aren't going to change that, at least not any time soon. And X will either be dead, irrelevant, or significantly modified by the time the court changes enough to get them to change their decision.

  • Yeah, they're supposed to serve the people who bought the politicians. /s

  • It absolutely should be talked about. All events in all of the world should be talked about as long as it involves factual information, which can sometimes be hard to come by these days . It's only extremists trying to create false narratives who would say otherwise. And mostly only because they don't want you telling the people they control the truth or they're so dependent using the lie to their advantage that even they don't want to know the truth.

  • Many times. It has been a fairly common theme. My dreams that I remember tend to be extreme emotional dreams. Either nightmares that I commonly had as a kid. Falling in love which was especially common as a teenager. And yeah, the extreme heartbreak is real. Music, which is connected closely to emotions for me and often manifests as beautiful symphonies that I wish I could immediately write down because damn I could probably make money off that s***. Flying or being under water and not drowning and the weight being lifted and the emotion of freedom tied to those. Etc.

  • Unfortunately, the US is now fully reliant on SpaceX for access to space now that they decided to rely on corporate spacecraft rather than building our own and Boeing has proven themselves unreliable since that change was made, and now that they finally have a craft they ended up stranding astronauts on the space station until SpaceX can rescue them due to defects. Plus we can't use Russia like we did after the shuttle program ended but corporate space travel wasn't there yet. And SpaceX isn't publicly traded to where it might be possible that enough investors could pressure Musk to cave.

So I doubt anything will come of it. Brazil will rattle their sabers. Musk will stand his ground, and the US will stay on Musk's side while pretending as much as possible to be staying out of it.

  • Sounds like he's setting up a defense as it being an official presidential act and thus him being immune from prosecution based on the blanket immunity that SCOTUS recently gave to presidents. So he'll admit to it, be immune, and let everyone else get prosecuted for knowingly following him.

  • The one positive to wearing contacts all the time is that my eyes are mostly protected from UV. I always think how cool that is even if I still avoid looking directly at UV lights out of caution.

  • Greatly depends on the type of alcohol. Since aging usually makes things more expensive and generally it greatly reduces the bitterness and alcohol "sting" as well as increasing the flavor from barrel woods and other additives, things that are aged often take a big jump in quality along with the big jump in price.

But outside of aging, you're definitely on the money. The stuff that's 25-50 is usually the best bang for your buck. The more expensive stuff is usually inflated by marketing like good advertising to make it popular or gimmicks like fancy bottles.

  • Yes.

Many products are now whipped to increase the volume with less product as a form of shrinkflation and/or include ingredients to reduce ice crystal formation from repeated melting and refreezing to reduce waste and the impact of understaffing in supply chains and grocery stores that lead to product being left out for extended periods. Haagen Dazs recently finally converted all of their flavors. The plain vanilla and vanilla swiss almond were a few of the last ones to change. But it's been a slow progression of different manufacturers over the last couple of decades really.

It's sad because ice cream is my favorite dessert. I eat a lot of it, or at least used to. There are only a few brands with a few flavors remaining that make good "hard" ice cream outside of ice cream shops. But the good shops are so expensive.

  • Too much soap. Especially if it's a high efficiency washer.

  • Problem is there's no marketing money to make the better platforms more widely known because there's not as much monetization of the users to fund it.

  • It's not social media that is the problem. It's capitalism. Social media is no different from the snake oil sales person, door to door sales people or Avon parties of the past. The problem is that kids aren't educated about how to deal with capitalistic greed that will do everything to convince you something is wrong with you in order to sell you the cure and are then allowed access to the Internet without that education. And the sales people don't face any consequences for marketing to children because they just pretend not to know and don't have to look them in the eye, so it's easier to be unethical without consequence.

  • Because the primary export of the US, in terms of percentage of GDP at least, is weapons.

  • Unfortunately, with corporate consolidation, punishing those companies often means losing access to an important product because there's not enough competition to fill the void that their retaliatory withholding would create.

  • Debian tends to require a lot of tweaking to get it to work well with more modern things. I've never gotten video and audio hardware to work out of the box to my satisfaction, for example. Ubuntu is definitely easier to use out of the box. But I also don't like the way Canonical has been taking it lately. And since I've been using CENTOS for servers for many, many years and more recently Rocky Linux, I decided to give Fedora another try after a failed attempt like a decade ago (I think the version at the time was Verne).

Combined with Plasma as a front end, Fedora is awesome. Some things aren't there that I'd prefer and flatpacks and snaps always have minor, annoying issues, but for the most part it does everything I need and even supports my fairly new laptop with a touchscreen and pretty modern hardware without any tweaking.

  • It's a power thing. Many people choose jobs that give them power over unfortunate people for the express purpose of abusing those people's vulnerability, not because they like to help people.

  • Yeah, you definitely should run it on a separate machine. A home NAS itself probably shouldn't be doing anything beyond serving files and basic maintenance. Using them for too much will reduce their ability to serve data fast enough. Just be sure the media server and NAS have appropriate network cards, preferably gigabit, though even 100Mbit probably is enough for most of your network isn't already too busy, and ideally are connected to the same switch (again preferably gigabit) with good quality network cables.

  • 1200sq ft only worth $300,000? 🤣 My 820 SQ ft home on 1600 SQ ft of land cost nearly $880,000 a few years ago, and is currently valued at 1.2 million on redfin, though that's ridiculous. And it's pretty average quality, just in a relatively nice neighborhood in a major city on the US West Coast. It's insane.

  • On the age thing, TBH anyone under 25 or so should not be dating anyone more than 10 years older than them. It's still a very formative time both physically (brain development) and psychologically/sociologically. It can cause serious power dynamic issues that risk them being unable to end the relationship or deny consent for certain things. That said gender doesn't make a difference in those scenarios beyond the fact that women are at a disadvantage and less likely to be wealthy and use that to control the younger.

But outside of issues where the older person holds power over the younger, I don't think age should even be that big of a thing. Yes, people of different generations are less likely to have things in common and other conflicts can occur that are age related, but that's for them to decide.
