It's possible they didn't properly treat the liquid they were using as coolant and needed the lye and borax to remove scaling and that it actually wasn't the coolant itself. That would also explain not having the proper permits for storing the chemicals if they were just being used for cleaning. Though wouldn't be surprised if they were then just going to dump it down the drain anyway...
I have it running on a raspberry pi at home behind a reverse proxy on my router and backed up to rsync.net. But hosting it on a cheap VPS might be easier.
Depends on context. If you're discussing it in a medical context, the terms are separate. Dependence refers specifically to the severity of the effects of stopping the drug, both physical and psychological. Addiction is more about the behavior of a person when exposed to the substances and is not as strictly defined of a term in a medical sense. But generally, dependence is a component addiction. So not all dependence results from addiction, but most definitions of addiction include some kind of dependence.
So, not the same thing, but also, outside of medical context, most people don't differentiate the terms and use the word addiction to refer to the dependence component of addiction.
I don't want their money. Money means they'll feel even more like they own it. I want them to contribute code to the projects and stop violating copyleft licenses and share the code they are creating.
I stay away from proprietary stuff when there are great open source alternatives out there. A proprietary system will always be more driven by those funding it, than the needs of the user and nearly always turn users into products, selling their information.
I've been using Firefox variants for a while. I use LibreWolf on desktop and Mull on mobile and a self hosted sync server so it works seamlessly. But there are others, or just use Firefox and disable or block telemetry. There are a few sites here and there that I don't have the choice not to use and don't like the privacy features or don't render properly, so I keep Chrome around for emergencies. But that's rare, mostly government sites.
It's the stupid toxic "romance" that I want rid of. It gets so boring and tedious to watch. If it's important to the story, then fine. But otherwise can we just normalize friendship between opposite gendered people without the need for bad relationship drama, jealousy, and normalizing the idea that when someone says no, they're actually just "playing hard to get".
France doesn't have a storage place and desperately needs one. Same with Japan or the Fukushima disaster would have been much less impactful. They are closer to having one, but many scientists say their solution is not going to work permanently due to corrosion and earthquakes. Similar reasons to why the US stopped building their own storage facilities. They aren't permanent enough and eventually will probably leak and require expensive, dangerous maintenance or abandoning the land, among other issues and cost overruns.
As for reprocessing, the basic science is there, and has been for a long time. But it never has been and likely never will be profitable thus the headline using the word "could" and no one having built a prototype reactor. Fusion tech is closer to a usable state than these and different reactors produce different waste that requires different reactors to reprocess partially. Then to further process, a different reactor is required, etc. It's not a simple process and the energy it produces might pay for maintaining the facilities, but not for the development costs to turn theoretical technology into workable engineering designs or the construction costs.
Renewable energy is much more profitable when you include the cist of storage or reprocessing of nuclear waste, so as soon as companies have too much to store, they'll leave the rest to taxpayers and move on.
Yeah I work for a major company in healthcare and they don't allow Windows 11 for several reasons.
But also outside of the healthcare data issue, there's the legal issue of retaining data. Our company doesn't allow us to retain emails for more than 2 years and there are lots of other retention policies, and software to enforce them, that don't require keeping data, but instead require deleting it. This is a common trend in major corporations right now. You can't have data hacked or subpoenaed in a court case if it doesn't exist. Recall is great for micromanagement of employees, but bad for just about all other parts of a company. I don't get who is behind this and who they think they're appeasing with it.
Also because security mostly refused to use deadly force. Those security forces are mostly used to dealing with tourist issues, not criminals with guns. That may change if more hardened, militarized police forces are used.
How is that FUD? A fuel rod lasts about 3-5 years. And there is no permanent storage place in the US (or any other countries for that matter) or reprocessing technology being developed anywhere. So in a decade, if they are running several reactors, they'll have a bunch of rods sitting in giant pools with nowhere safe to put them.
Yeah I like that almond milk is not too much flavor. It means it doesn't distract from the flavor of the thing it's added to, only changes the texture and smooths out bitterness and other unpleasant flavor components like with tea and coffee. I prefer to get good tea or coffee and not add anything, but that stuff is expensive, so I get middle of the road quality and add almond milk to smooth it out but still keep some of the highlights.
Oat milk is good for the really mediocre stuff, though. It smooths it out a lot and adds some flavor. And I do like oats a lot in general. But a lot of times the oat milk is too gritty or too heavy. I found that making my own oat milk does eliminate those problems, but takes more effort and doesn't last long if I make a lot of it at once to reduce the effort.
Yeah, making patents nontransferable would solve that. Ultimately, getting rid of most would be good, but if we have to keep them, then they should be dissolved if a company fails or is bought out because obviously the patent itself wasn't enough to make a product that was viable. So everyone should get the chance to use the patent. The whole purpose of a patent vs keeping tech proprietary until the product is released was to benefit society once the patent expires. Otherwise, it makes more sense for companies to keep inventions secret if they aren't just stockpiling them like they do now.
Tech patents are ridiculous. Let's end them or reduce them to 1-3 years with no renewal. Then all that's left is the specific copyright to the technology, not lingering webs of patents that don't make any sense anyway to anyone with detailed knowledge of the tech. All they're good for is big companies using legal methods to stop innovation and competition. Tech moves too fast for long patents and is too complex for patent examiners or courts to understand what is really patentable. So it comes down to who has the most money for lawyers.
DMCA is a tool for suppression of free information. It doesn't require evidence that you've made a good faith effort to consider fair use or other legal complexity as it's meant to take down the information before that is settled in court, but most commonly used to suppress information from a person or group who can't afford to fight it in court. Microsoft's Github has a history of delete first without risking their own necks to stand up for obviously fraudulent takedowns much less ones with unsettled law like APIs/SDKs.
They're basically trying to get rid of vaultwarden and other open source forks. I expect they'll get a cease and desist and be removed from github at some point in the not too distant future if they don't make some changes. I have a vaultwarden instance and use the bit warden clients. Guess I'll need to look for alternatives in case Bitwarden decides to get aggressive.
Hourly wage is just as useless as unemployed percentages since neither count a large group of people. Unemployed statistics don't count gig workers, service workers, etc., who are chronically underemployed. But even if you count their hours as a percentage you still would exclude all of the gig workers who are paid per job that can often span multiple hours. But none of that information is tracked, so it can't be accounted for proportionally. So these stats are purposely worthless and tell the story that the wealthy want to tell so they can keep getting wealthier and pretend they aren't taking that wealth from everyone else.
