  • That sounds very appealing. I'll check it out.

  • Of the tops out there, btop is my favorite followed by glances. They are all useful, I just like the way btop presents the data

  • I had previously thought about a wiki or as one person suggested a 'notes blog'. Still toying with all the options.

  • I downloaded the windows version of emacs and I'll give it a go. I figured, I could test it out locally and if it checks out, I could move it to the server. It's easier to uninstall from windows as I just fire up Revo and let it eat. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I deployed it on the test server, but it was getting kind of late and this old man needs his night meds accompanied by a bowl....for a nightly muse with some free form jazz.. :) I will get into it on the morrow, and let you know. I do appreciate your input.

  • Can you be more specific about the features you’re looking for?

Well, so far, of those I've tried that were recommended in this thread, something along the lines of what I posted further down: https://lemmy.world/post/30511835/17370680. I like the way I can search Obsidian and it gives me the left hand side with all the choices, and highlights the selected choice. Sometimes I can only remember a part or work I'm searching for, so having a multitude of choices ready for me to choose, is very nice. I haven't tried all the recommendations here, and I haven't settled on Obsidian, but so far it's checking a lot of boxes.

  • Although I call it a “blog”,

You know, I did have an idea about just such a thing, tho it would be private. I gave your 'blog' a bookmark and will definitely check quarto

  • Took a look at the git. I've got it on the list.

    'presh

  • So far, I really like how Obsidian searches and gives you a list in the left hand side, and highlights the chosen result. That's very nice. I haven't settled on Obsidian yet. Still need to try out the rest of the recommendations from the kind folks here, however it's definitely in the running.

    Thanks

  • I have not met logseq, tho I am currently reading up on it. There's apparently a docker container for it as well along with a plethora of plugins to extend it's functions. I'm down with trying it. I will read some more. Thanks very much for the recommendation.

  • I know, right? Any 'free' service with that much infrastructure to support, is more than likely selling your data. I guess, it's kind of refreshing that a company comes right out and tells you they're about to bend you over the barrel.

  • I do not audit code line by line, bit by bit. However, I do due diligence in making sure that the code is from reputable sources, see what other users report, I'll do a search for any unresolved issues et al. I can code on a very basic level, but I do not possess the intelligence to audit a particular app's code. Beyond my 'due diligence' I rely on the generosity of others who are more intelligent than I and who can spot problems. I have a lot of respect and admiration for dev teams. They produce software that is useful, fun, engaging, and it just works.

    • It's educational for those who have a lust for learning.
    • It's fun.
    • It's far more private than using commercial cloud services.
  • I may have to give Cups a try. Watchtower is cool and all, but my issue is this:

The bold part is where the problem occurs. So when there is an error response from the daemon, it stops all updates to that container, and leaves it deleted. This has happened to me several times, but not always. It does update other containers but sometimes it gets a little wonky and I haven't been able to fix that with anything that I have tried.

  • You’re acting like we’re Luddites or something

No, what I am saying tho is, give it a bit of time to sort itself out. If you don't want an AI Rice Cooker, don't get one. It's the knee jerk reaction to AI that I'm talking about. Do I like corporations mining and stealing my data. No, and I take proper precautions to circumvent that. Do I think that there are better options than people storing every last bit of their data on corporate cloud farms. Of course, but I don't hate on them. They do it because it's convenient and they don't understand that there are other options. A Dropbox or Gmail account takes about 5 minutes to spin up. Would I make recommendations if asked, as to what the better options are? Of course I would, I might even bring the topic up in certain situations, But again, I don't hate you because you use corporate clouds, or piss around with face swap AI, or hate on you because you bought an AI Rice Cooker, no matter what I think of them. For instance, the Cybertruck. I think that is about the most useless vehicle I've ever seen. It looks like some kid's welding shop project they did for a grade. But you do you.

Ffs can you be any more dismissive and denigrating by comparing us to Luddites?

Didn't compare you to a Luddite at all, and I apologize if it seemed that way. However I was making the comparison of AI hate to what I experienced when computers first became a public commodity and the hate people were spewing about them. Hell, I remember a lecture about the 'evils' of the calculator when they became available to the public. This knee jerk reaction proliferates through out all new technology. On the corporate side, of course they promote these things because, well, a business is usually in the business to maximize it's profit potential to it's investors. Even if you run a non-profit, you still gotta make some paper, but I'm not on a mission against corporate technologies. If you ask me if it's a good idea to have a Gmail account where Google reads your most private emails, I'd tell you no. I just don't hate on it. If you have a Gmail account. Good for you. Have fun with it.

And, I’m probably mot much younger than you, and I can call bullshit on your claims

Yes, you probably are as I am soon to be 71.

  • This right here. If you are promoting your biz with a generic email address, it goes in the junk folder. It's 2025 people. Legit businesses use legit email addresses. I as hardnosed about my texts or phone calls. If you are not on my extensive list of friends, family, business associets or aquaintances, and you don't leave a message, you get banned as spam.

  • No worries mate. I was just curious. I have never incorporated both those in a searxng stack and was wondering what they brought to the stack.

  • I've run a bunch of containers and if it would be helpful I could clean it up and donate it to the cause. It'll take a few days to clean up and maybe clarify anything better. 30 minute 30 mile warranty

  • I think you'll love Proxmox. I have a blast with it, however, I am not the selfhost guru, so you may want to wait for someone more authoritative than I. As far as everything running on one container, personally I like to split anything AI off to it's own VM. That way I can toggle it on or off when needed and it's not just eating up ram for no good reason.

I have played with CasaOS. Pretty nice package, especially if you are just getting your feet wet, or just want to be able to quickly spin up containers. In this category there is also Umbrel, RunTipi, or Cosmos Server, to name a few. They all have their pros/cons.

Tailscale rocks! Simply put. It's super easy to set up and you can tunnel a crap load of data through it.

As far as 'must have' software, Searxng gets a huge workout on a daily basis for me. If you like tinkering/building work flows, N8N, LangFlow, and Flowise get steady use on my network. I can't speak to the 'arr stack' and I have all the media I could ever want, and I'm not much of a movie watcher, but sky's the limit based on what you want to do with your server. When you have Proxmox up and running, be sure to check out the Proxmox Helper Scripts. Lots of goodies there.

    Have fun bro.

  • We could say the very same things about all technology tho. I'm old enough to have lived a rather full life before the advent of the computer revolution. People in my age bracket lamented almost the same things you have pointed out in regards to computers, or really any new technology. Boomers, for some reason, seem to hate technology, even tho they use it on a minute by minute basis. Computers will rot your brain. Computers will do your thinking for you. Computers are going to take over the world. Yet, here we all sit in Lemmy Selfhosted, fully immersed in computer tech.

I hear what you are saying, and in some respects I can find commonality. However, I'm not on a mission from god, and have long since given up on trying to save the world from itself. I'm not saying it isn't a worthy cause, it's just that 8.2 billion people have 8.2 billion different ideas than I do.
