  • I’ve seen a few classic cars retro fitted with Tesla batteries and engines from junkyard teslas. A common thread in that space is that you don’t get high speed charging. There weren’t really alternatives to super chargers at that time, so maybe they can use the other high speed chargers these days. Anyway, that’s tells me it’s possible, but that’s an extreme end of it. Just removing software probably requires a lot of specialized knowledge.

  • I Would fucking love an affordable EV kit for Jeep wrangler TJs. While we’re dreaming, Honda Goldwings/Valkyries also, though that couldn’t start from a Tesla. I really want an electric motorcycle with a more classic road bike look instead of a sport bike.

  • So I’m sure how we conceive of being the dominant species is biased. But if we talk about civilizations and their ability to eventually propagate beyond earth, I don’t think dolphins have it. Their ancestry tried out land and said “nah, back to the water”. Not to mention anything we do that takes humans out of the equation entirely is going to probably kill off the dolphins, apes, elephants, basically most of the mammalians. It’ll be so long before something evolves to take our place as “earthlings” all our works will be fossils at best

  • Fair enough. It’s not going to summarize results or anything. I’ll give chatGPT that one. But this is also where chatGPT can easily pull wrong information into the summary. If the “here’s something I found on the web” isn’t accurate, the topic is likely to have the AI summary screw it up too. In which case you’re better off manually searching and filtering results yourself.

  • I don’t think it ever did. It does qualify you for legal residency status, resident alien or “green card” as most people refer to it. I’m pretty sure that status can be voided if you did anything illegal along the way. For citizen status you still have to go through the process.

  • In 21 you could have gotten some of the first Ford Mustang MachEs to come off the line, if you were lucky. Chevy was doing ok with the bolt, but I’ve never personally liked the style of the bolt. Leafs were another OK model specifically for commuting, but IIRC Kelly lives in Tucson and if he was making regular trips to Phoenix a leaf wouldn’t have cut it. Polestar was available, but relatively unknown. And I think a few luxury brands had EVs at that point. So yes there were other EV players, but “strong” is a subjective term, unless you were doing a fair amount of research you likely wouldn’t have known about them.

  • I believe this is one of those things where intent matters, and may vary by location. Willing to bet hitting F5 a few times is safe, even a few hundred times as long as it’s in the realm of just checking if it’s up yet. The moment you have something scripted, you’re at least in the realm of having to explain it to a judge who probably knows fuck all about tech.

  • I’m a web applications developer…. So a lot. But here’s the king of dumb shit fixes I’ve done. Back in the days of VGA a few friends and I met up with some other dudes for a counter strike LAN party. Everyone’s hauling their towers in and if you were lucky, your heavy as fuck 17” CRT. So I set up and my monitor won’t work. Has power, no signal. Switch from the gpu vga port to the integrated one and it works. Switch back to gpu and it works as long as I hold it in a weird position. So it’s all fine, just the connection is wearing out. For some reason I figure a little moisture will help so I lick the vga plug, reattach it and it totally solved the problem.

So yeah, I licked a gpu into working again.

  • I have this weird habit of buying the less popular but arguably better thing. I went with windows phone, a nook instead of a kindle, an zune mp3 player, and a Mustang MachE instead of a Model Y. That last choice might have been the only one that ultimately paid off.

  • A big plus one to ambiguous switches. Two things I didn’t see already mentioned:

First: if you have content that requires horizontal scrolling, like a big table or report, that horizontal scroll bar needs to be on the screen, not at the bottom of the report. I shouldn’t have to scroll hundreds of rows vertically in order to be able to scroll horizontally. While we’re at it, column headers need to stay on screen when you scroll vertically past them.

Second: if there are two choices, identifying which is active needs to be more than just changing the color. Outline that shit or add a halo, throb, or something. Sometimes a user depends on tabbing and not using a pointing device or touch screen, especially when using assistive technology. This is especially heinous when the content is consumed on a tv using a remote control, such as a streaming service or DVD menu.

  • Would these be used for military purposes, or for VIP transportation?

Either way I don’t think any current EV platform is suitable, but the Rivian R1S or delivery van might be the closest.

GM actually might be in the best position. They need to electrify Suburbans anyway. They could easily adapt the Silverado platform to suburbans, or the hummer EV to more of an H1 type and then work on armoring them up. But their CEO isn’t pulling the president’s strings like Tesla’s is, so what we’ll end up with it’s a shit ton of government money spent on a product no one will actually want to use.

  • The person on my left whispers about equality, and the benefits of social safety nets. The person on my right yells lies that equality means I have to give up things, and that social safety nets will be abused by people who want to steal the fruits of my labor. The person behind me (financially) says nothing, they’re too busy just trying to live. The person ahead of me points to the person behind getting food stamps and screams “how dare they take your taxes” while they quietly steal the actual fruit of my labor.

Any time leftism gets loud enough to get enough attention to appeal to anyone, rightism is already loudly complaining about the noise. If one doesn’t think about it too much, all they’ve heard is negativity about the left and positivity about the right. Call it brainwashing, gaslighting, or indoctrination, but rarely do the facts of both sides come to play. You have to work to find the truth of leftism while also working to ignore the bullshit being screamed from the right.

  • A good PT will make “chiropractic adjustments” when it’s in the patients best interest. They will also recommend surgery or refer to an MD if drugs will help. Chiropractors will almost never do these things because they make money treating, not curing. If it’s been years, and you’re still seeing them, what have they cured?

I suffered with what turned out to be a near-herniated disc for years. Tried chiro, tried PT. The difference was the PT kept track of progression, and as soon as I couldn’t progress, sent me for imaging, saw the bulging disc and referred me to a specialist. After a year total of PT, steroid injection, ablative surgery, and recover; I went from being unable to bend down and pick up a sock to doing karate classes with my kid.

Chiro has its place in a treatment plan, it shouldn’t be the only part of a plan.

  • IMO Android is worse unless you really tinker with it. Most people don’t even know how to side load an app, much less root and degoogle. Many people don’t know to buy carrier unlocked phones or can’t afford to. The last android I used had several carrier apps forced onto it, unable to be removed, including apps I refuse to use like Facebook, which I’m sure the carrier got a kickback to force on us. Then the carrier decided no more updates despite the manufacturer releasing more major updates.

Most people just don’t know or care enough to do what should be done with an android phone. They just want a device to call and text on that can also crush candy or whatever other distraction they prefer.

  • Kind of wish we went with more tradesmen-like titles. Apprentice, journeyman, master. Master software developer sounds like we have honed our craft. Junior/senior just seems like a length of time.
