  • I can’t for the life of mine figure out how to do spoiler tags on Lemmy, so I’ll speak in code lol. Did you mean the decision associated with him dropping the thing? If so, I admit I was a tad surprised, but I kinda see why, especially with how the season has shaped his relationships. Plus, we got to see that awesome fight.

  • yes definitely. It’s based on Bruce Lee’s ideas btw so if you’re into fight choreography, it’s awesome. Even if you’re not, the story about the Chinese immigrants is really well done. I’m not usually into period drama but this has become one of my favorite shows.

  • speaking of libraries, there is also a need for archiving knowledge and information for the public good, such as books and research articles. Especially the latter are usually created and, many times, already paid for by the researchers themselves (often via tax money), many of whom would prefer to have their research disseminated.

In the global north, many universities can afford such high-priced publisher premium. But in the global south, and many underfunded universities, hospitals, schools in general, such prices are impossible. So in practicality, they turn to piracy for the most part.

  • Except for signal, matrix is also decentralized. I understand what you meant tho. I think matrix still stores user data on servers, but they could be encrypted. Others who know please correct me.

  • darn, this is kinda sad. This is like research on existing works, rather than generating new ones and potentially exploiting them without attribution. It’s like another way of consuming and interpreting the content, much like how we read/watch books/movies and interpret them. We really are moving too quickly and it’s hard to have these conversations in a meaningful way.

  • Reuters reported in 2022, however, that some cities are beginning to rethink bans on face recognition as a crime-fighting tool amid "a surge in crime and increased lobbying from developers."

Sounds to me like there’s a deeper issue here in these cities (probably society in general) that needs to be tackled at its root why people are turning to crime. Is it because they couldn’t find reliable jobs to support themselves and their families? Is it related to drug abuse issues that might be rooted in or coupled with mental health issues?

If these hold some truth, then cities need to take a look at them much closely, invest in the people and organizations that can help solve them, rather than overly investing in technologies and enforcement that not only do not solve them, but may even further exacerbate these systemic issues.

  • ask every culture

even though I’m pretty sure that’s a rhetorical question, I’m just gonna answer anyway, that it’s not practical.

I think with the internet and all, cultures will interact, clash, sometimes merge, change, mutate. It’s really hard to keep track of everything. I believe that it’s important to keep this in mind, to continue learning while still maintaining sensitivity, empathy and tolerance towards one another.

In this context of language and appropriation, I believe people should be open to learn, but not necessarily expected to always know, about the contexts and use of a potential controversial choice of words or language. At the same time, we should be empathetic to each other, no one knows everything, so help each other instead of berating and isolating one another.

There may be some notions that are really specific to a very small minority. Simultaneously, similar concepts and ideas may arise independently across the world from different cultures throughout different times in history. Sometimes, they are “born” due to culture interactions as well. Due to such complexity, instead of being too defensive or offensive, maybe it’s better if we are a bit tolerable when we can. Don’t always assume the worst. Continue to educate ourselves and have patience to educate others.

  • Yeah, I agree, my bad, just edited it. Do you know whether the concept/word of spirit animal exists in only a small subsets of Native American cultures, or in all cultures related to Native Americans?
