  • as much as I would really like that, that’s a catch-all statement that is not realistic. Unfortunately google has its claws in enterprises, universities and organizations all over the world, across so many domains.

I don’t believe “stop using” is good enough, as it seems only a very small minority realistically could.

This needs to be paired with proper legislation, like others have said, from EU as an example.

If you have friends/family with Google employees, please raise this issue up with them. This also needs to come internally as well, in addition to top-down processes from regulation.

  • expanding on the other commenter’s response, inspect the 2FA link, you should be able to see the secret/seed token string, and possibly also which algorithm it is. In your 2FA app, choose the option to enter manually. Remember to verify. Sometimes it might not work because you might also need to fiddle around with the other parameters/configurations when entering in manually.

  • It’s so weird because I thought I Lemmy sorting algo has something to do with some power law? of upvotes and age, but I remember this one didn’t have that many (which I initially had thought it was new without looking at the date). So it should not shown up at all. Anyway, yes the sortong algo needs some re-thinking, and potentially allowing users/instances to control the parameters.

  • I guess you're already said it, there are ones that have a network effect, and depending on your priorities/relationships, you can cut them off or compromise. I cut off Facebool/Meta products in general some time ago, because it was clear that would be better for my mental health. Still kept in touch with people through texts and Signal. And I'm OK with having a smaller less noisy network. For most of my personal relationships and matters, I'd have to compromise less.

On the other hand, for more professional matters, like work, or trying to find communities that I care about or seek help from, I'd have to compromise more and accept that I have to use Zoom, Slack, Google products, ... I have found ways to be OK with it. I hope you can find a way.

At the same time I may raise issues about those products' nature if/when appropriate, with my colleagues, while acknowledging that the alternatives aren't always seamless and easy. Let's face it, many alternatives keep changing, and may require a high level of entry. Anw, when I can and if it's easy enough, i may show them how I use alternatives and let them decide on their own.

Key points: compromise, be understanding & empathetic but still vigilant and an advocate when possible

EDIT: holy crap, I just realized this post is 3Y old. I’m an idiot 🤦

  • It is possible that this is a troll. Their account is 1h old. The OP of the post also is new. I saw a post on the another asklemmy in which OP makes quite ridiculous statements and their acc is also new. That’s 3 in a short span of a couple of hours. Here’s to hoping this is not an orchestrated thing, and it’s just people revealing who they are through pseudo-anonymity.

  • Then this relationship is already not healthy. If OP refuses to compromise, that is also not a good sign for the relationship. Yes, OP should be allowed to do whatever they want with their body, but not to the extent of potentially hurting others around them, especially knowingly so. And relationship is a 2-way street that needs communication, understanding and compromise. If OP wants to continue smoking, they can do so, but should understand their partner’s point of view and the consequences.

  • Have you looked at this from her standpoint? Cigarettes cause cancer, and second-hand smoke can lead to cancer as well, or at least serious health issues. Her being with you in the long run may mean she might get it, or you get it, or both of you get it. All outcomes are really bad for both of you, physically, emotionally/mentally.

I’m not sure how serious you two are. But if you are, maybe start to work on it. If you say you can stop, prove it to her and yourself. If you say you don’t have an addiction, test that theory, for both you and her. If you want to meet her half-way, maybe consider cutting back or switching to vape.

  • If you use other package managers like flatpak, nix-env (for non-NixOS), npm (for global stuff), … you can just create a bash script to list all installed packages for each manager, and save to a file(s). I put them in a git repo to version control these lists, which are updated every now and then when I update stuff.
