Agreed ... but in order for the US to push through their rocket program, they needed scientists and researchers to develop, test, build, test, retest, and test some more all of the applied science that had been developed. The country needed to build an entire community of thousands of professionally trained technicians, scientists, engineers, professionals ... and with them had to come teams of administrators, academics, trainers, bureaucrats, office workers ... and with all of them had to come entire groups of trained builders, workers, electricians, plumbers, draftsmen, planners and all the people that came with ... and all that had to be supported by an industry that needed to build and develop all the things that had to be needed to get this monolith moving, which meant that all these corporations and businesses needed their own teams of professionally trained people.
It was a massive investment in education in order to get the ball rolling in industry to build the rocket program. It wasn't just building rockets ... it was building an entire industry upon industry upon industry to get to the point of building a single rocket that could launch anything into orbit.
The reason why any of it happened was that the government heavily invested in educating and training an entire population to make it all possible.
I never downvote people on Lemmy but I did for this one .... I just spent the past month going through some invoicing and paper receipts and it is absolutely infuriating to still see some businesses using MM-DD-YY while others insist on DD-MM-YY and some businesses have invoicing and receipt printers that use one or the other but not the same. It's not a big deal if you are dealing with documents that are a month or two old because you can guess from what time period they come from ... but it is absolutely confusing if documents get older than that.
Anyone that gives me a document or receipt or invoice with a date formatted DD-MM-YYYY should have a tire iron swung at their thighs

At this rate, in about a decade, tabloids will be formatted like comics with more pictures than words to make it easier for people
There was already a precedent for all this. After the Second World War, American jumped right into the Cold War with the Russians and wanted to take the lead in science, technology, rocketry, space and engineering. They quickly realized that their country at the time was ill equiped and not well trained or educated for all this ... so they took the shortcut of using former Nazis to head their science and technology fields for a few years. Then to take up the slack, the government heavily invested in education and training to pump out the scientists, engineers and professionals they needed to gear up their technological war with the Soviets.
So the 50s, 60s, and 70s got filled with a lot of bright well trained, well educated and informed young people. They were able to power the American war machine but a side effect to all that was all these insightful young people became the backbone of a counter culture that fought against war, capitalism, inequality, conservatism and racism and supported black rights, Native rights, women's rights, minority rights, animal rights and environmentalism.
Then they had to bring in people like Reagan and Thatcher to reign in these counter culture movements and swing the pendulum back again. Once they defeated the Soviets in the Cold War, conservative America had all the incentive to break everything down again and dumb down the population until it was a just a compliant pulp that could elect a clown.
That's good news! ... it means they're improving! USA! USA! USA!

What I love about this is all the republican, far right gun totting idiots that said that electing communist democrats would lead to the country breaking down and authoritarian government taking control of everything with military force .... and how right wing idiots would be the first to fight back with their guns.

As an Indigenous Canadian, I've always been aware of where I stand in society .... and no matter what anyone says or likes to believe ... I'm not that high up on the totem pole (no pun intended)
That's what pisses me off .... and all for what? So that we, the majority of people everywhere can enjoy a little of security and a livelihood where we don't have to worry about losing our home and ability to eat and clothe ourselves? And what are they protecting? Their obscene amounts of wealth that no individual person could enjoy in a lifetime!
That's the amazing thing about it ... if we are working for them, then they'll grudgingly do things to protect us and provide for our safety
... if we outright disagree with them and protest, then they'll actively put us all in danger, to wound, blind, maim or even kill us until we conform.
I saw this during the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York city
We're in northern Ontario in Canada and I was with my wife and her mother. My mother in law was a great lady, tiny, Irish Canadian completely and with a heart of gold. She had lived through the second world War where she lost her husband, her husband's brother, three other of her husband's brothers who were in the war and a long list of friends she saw leave school to take part in the war and some of them not come back, some completely psychologically destroyed and others just surviving life.
She was making chili that morning when we got up. I turned on the TV and couldn't believe what we were watching. It was like a movie. We watched live the first burning building and then soon after watched the second plane crash on live TV. It was surreal.
My mother in law came in and watched with us for a while. We were glued to the TV and waited for more .... all day! My mother in law got up after five minutes and went back to her chili.
We told her this was historic. You can't miss it.
She said she's already lived through wars, near wars, threatened nuclear war, end of the world predictions, fall of the Soviet Union and a whole bunch more.
She said she felt bad for everyone but we can't do anything right now.
She went back to cooking her chili.

I've worked in construction and building for many years and from time to time I had to get safety training.
Basically, any small object that is moving fast enough is dangerous. It's not so bad if it hits your skin but it is absolutely dangerous if it flies anywhere on your head and face. You can lose eyes, teeth, hearing even have objects fly into your mouth and the soft parts of your throat and mouth. Remember that your face is basically an airbag to protect your skull - your brain doesn't care what happens to your face because if anything damages the face or eyes, it will save the brain - so you might survive a shot to the face but does it really matter if you're blind or maimed in the mouth, nose or ears. In war time, soldiers have been known to blow off the entire face, jaw, nose, eyes and all and still survive.
The world is insane .... we have OSHA standards that regulate what can or can't be done in a work zone to keep people safe from harm and even death
But when it comes to dealing with people in a public protest ... all that safety goes out the window as police are allowed to fire small objects at unsafe speeds into people's bodies and faces! Onto unsuspecting people with no training, knowledge or wherewithal to know that they should at least wear safety glasses.
The fascist government is running scared and confused? ..... then it means the protests are working.
