Bob makes a precise observation and thus concludes that the earth is round.

Rob is told that the earth is round, in school, and thus concludes that the earth is round.

Are they both right?

I think every nation offers that argument, not just Hitler.

That's generally all we've got. Nobody has time for science or whatever.

But if you had evidence that you were manipulated, that would make you feel less certain in your rightness. Right?

A virus would. But a man should be certain that he's propagating truth, surely.

If you had evidence that you are a victim of manipulation, it shakes your certainty.

Via the mind-manipulating technique called "propaganda" an idea is inserted into your head, and the rightness of the idea too.

Why play these games?

Case in point

In the past you received a symbol, and a meaning to go with that symbol.

In the present, you refer to that meaning when you see that symbol.

Yes, there was some kind of deeper communication in the past. The dictionary was written (among other things. Like the vastness of non-symbolic experience. Sensations and such).

But in the present, in the act of "reading", it's just you, the dictionary (symbolic and nonsymbolic) and the symbol stream. However you slice it, the dictionary is large and the symbol stream is small.

I never met the fellow. I never did the science either.

You all are easily impressed.

The best language is complete, succinct, orderly and clear. And never adds a single goddamn thing ever.

The lead paint and the asbestos both served a need. For colored toys and insulation, specifically. And then we found a better way to serve that need. It isn't a dumb need.

Don't assume that everybody who sees things differently is an idiot.

Given its vast popularity, I expect that some would argue otherwise.

Call it "stories that people are taking way too seriously". I'm sure that you can think of other stories that people take way too seriously too, that have nothing to do with religion.

I think that we might be seeing the power of propaganda there. Consider that the science of propaganda is very old. Thousands of years old. There's population-control psychology there. It's got hooks.

(On the flipside, imposing a set of rules for moral behavior is a good thing. People can be animals. And if you need to cite an old story about gods and wizards to give those rules some oomph then so be it.)
