  • Looks like an issue with your windows install. I would check in the settings that you're not in power saving mode or something like that, it could reduce the power allocation for the GPU and CPU, and it may also disable the dedicated GPU when enabled. It's true there are some games that are faster in Linux, but it's usually within 5-10% of Windows, not over double the performance

  • Billionaires don't really buy bunkers for themselves, they often buy them as hotels for the people who can afford to pay an extra rent all year long. The way it usually works is paranoid people will pay for a room inside the bunker, for a monthly or yearly fee to guarantee them a room in case of a disaster

  • To be fair, Eichhörnchen and écureuil seem to have a similar root as well even though French is a Latin language and German is not

  • Similar to this:

The french word for squirrel (écureuil) is equally hard for English speakers to pronounce as the English word is for French speakers

(I would also add that most English words with two R's are hard for French speakers; mirror, error and the like)

  • The point is definition doesn't matter, it's the viewing distance + pixel density that matters. This is what apple calls retina: when we stop seeing the individual pixels (jagged edges) at a normal viewing distance. This means that a phone will need a much higher pixel density than a desktop or tv. But the low-dpi displays we still have are unacceptable in 2024 the icons and text look so ugly...

  • I can definitely see the difference between a 1440p 27 inch display vs a 5k 27 inch display, add in high refresh rate and HDR and you already are close to exceeding the DP 2.0 maximum bandwidth (without display stream compression). I wish we could finally get decent high DPI monitors on desktops that aren't made by or for apple Macs

  • Yeah.. a headphone jack is nice for charging and listening at the same time, but I'll say it, the 10$ usb-c apple dongle does the job just fine and covers 99% of use cases. Plus it can also be used on devices with shitty DACs because the dongle is essentially one and it's pretty good as well

  • I wish gnome would do the same and show a notification in December as well

  • Lmao y'all are always criticizing the right over their conspiracy theories while doing the exact same thing

  • I've checked UnitedHealth and CVS, both are down about 10% for the week. Good time to buy some UNH and CVS

  • That's how I learned too, but at first yeah obv training wheels are useful in order to not have to reinstall the os every 2 days. About malware though, it may be more sneaky in general but some sites I've seen recently still use the old ways, especially for game mods or file downloads, they still use the giant green download button trick. Also, she will grow up in the internet that we have today, so if she learns the old stuff, it may not be that useful

In any case, just for thinking of this, she will probably be one of the most tech savvy person in her generation! I hope she will be thankful

  • One way would be to let them find out the hard way. Make sure they understand that everyone can see what they do and say and that they can find them back as a first base step. Let them have to click the right download button when downloading a mod for their game, you know. Make a setup so that if there's theres a big oopsie with their devices yours arent affected. And from there they will install an ad blocker or learn to find the download button. You could also make a fake blackmail or phishing email to see how they react (I've thought about making a fake phishing email for the elder ones in my family recently too...) and make it so that if they click, the screen goes black and red with crazy sounds.

  • What happens when you group all chronically online nerds in one place (twice not going outside and talking to girls)

  • What I like the most is the music recognition button, because its really quick and convenient, and it also works for content playing on your phone, as long as you use the phone's speakers. I think it doesnt use the media volume but rather the microphones only, but having the phone's volume enabled it probably feeds back into the microphones and it works this way.

  • Gnome is my choice because it doesn't look and feel like it was designed in 2015. I also much prefer the workflow with the touchpad gestures. I used to have extensions but since I reset my PC and didn't install any apart from the one that shows my cpu temperature in the top bar.

  • Pro tip, cut your onion in a well ventilated space. Like for example crack a window over the counter that you are cutting on, it will greatly reduce the effect, and it doesn't even need to be wide open
