  • Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I've been in that position a few times, actually; though usually it's after I put it on a todo list. I was planning to switch to Linux, then Microsoft made Windows intolerable to use. I was wanting to buy a new laptop, then Tr*mp started a trade war. I had "back up my Amazon ebooks" on a todo for several months, and then this news comes out.

It's like all of these companies and groups have decided to push me into doing stuff I wanted to do anyway.

  • Trump 2016: "When I'm elected, I'm going to be 100% bad."

MAGAs 2016: "Nuh-uh, what he means is that he's going to be -100% bad!"

Me 2016: "Actually I think he means he's going to be 100% bad."

MAGAs 2016: "LOL TRIGGERED MUCH STUPID LIB OWNED TDS TDS TDS TDS"

    Trump 2016-2020: <is 95% bad (the other 5% is ineptitude)>

MAGAs 2016-2020: "We didn't think it would be that bad!"

Me 2016-2020: "I mean, he told you he would."

MAGAs 2016-2020: "Well yeah but you said he was going to be 100% bad so you were wrong too! LOL TRIGGERED MUCH STUPID LIB OWNED TDS TDS TDS TDS"

    Trump 2024: "When I'm re-elected, I'm going to be 125% bad."

MAGAs 2024: "Nuh-uh, what he means is that he's going to be -200% bad, just like he was in his first term!"

Me 2024: "...your blindness to history you actually lived through aside, actually I think he means he's going to be 150% bad."

MAGAs 2024: "That doesn't even make mathematical sense! LOL TRIGGERED MUCH STUPID LIB OWNED TDS TDS TDS TDS"

Trump 2025: <is 125% bad (the ineptitude has also somehow grown)>

MAGAs 2025: "We didn't think it would be that bad!"

Are we doomed to this stupid, stupid dance until Trump finally succumbs to his arteries?

  • For sure, though at some point you still hit the centralization of DNS. There are distributed DNS resolvers, but you're still going to be a little bit beholden to domain name authorities. So with that backstop as a given, sometimes it's better to just live with the hosting company but be as platform-agnostic as possible so that you can jump ship to another one if needed—unless you're willing to go full TOR, I suppose.

  • It's an illusion. Not that many people care (which was the problem in November), but the ones who do are loud about it.

The issue is one of education. The Republicans have been spewing non-stop misinformation, and the populace is too uneducated to understand the difference. When people actually know what's going on and understand it, they overwhelmingly oppose conservative policies. Which is why Project 2025 wants to take a sledgehammer to public education.

If Democrats diverted all of their advertising budget toward remedial education of the electorate, I think they'd find themselves in a much better state in 2028.

  • It's not exactly 0%. Their ineptitude is still fully on display, and that's always been our greatest hope. But it is pretty bleak, and pinning our future on the hopes that the other side makes a mistake only makes it bleaker.

  • Honestly, I kind of hope they do.

Every time they experience the slightest indication that their views aren't normal or reasonable, they lose a little bit of confidence and a little bit of power.

Think about the "weird" moment last summer. Walz had Republicans sputtering and whining about how they totally aren't weird at all. The best Trump could come up with was "no u!" I think, if Harris had maintained that energy, she'd have been inaugurated this week. And speaking of this week, Trump is all offended and in a tizzy because an Episcopal priest read him the words of Jesus on Tuesday.

The slightest speedbump or disfavor spins them out.

Now. What community on the internet is more disfavorable toward conservatives than Lemmy? It's nothing but speedbumps for them over here. They'd last approximately an hour and a half, and they'd see a more united resistance than they've ever imagined from corporate-owned media. Some of them might even realize that the mainstream socials are actually preferential toward them, and maybe reevaluate some opinions. For a moment, they'd see how weird they are.

Filter bubbles aren't inherently bad. But when they're holding together an odious group in a terrible shared delusion, they need to be popped. Lemmy might pop their bubble, at least a little bit.

Let them come. I pity their bar tabs.

  • He cited how another company works as defense for his decision in his company.

Ok. Honestly at this point the length of this conversation is way out of proportion with my interest in it.

And social media companies don't meet together in secret meetings to strategize how they'll collude with each other.

I honestly don't know how someone could be paying attention to the business world in 2024 and believe this earnestly.

A lot of times, they are making independent strategic decisions that happen to align.

    Just "happen to." Total coincidence.

  • He specifically cited Elon and Twitter as reasoning when shutting down the API. So now, if Elon calls up Spez and says he wants the links unbanned, I betcha Spez dances to Elon's tune.

I recognize that it's not a financial loss for him now. But it's also not really enough of a gain for him to care; all the social media CEOs are co-cronies together, so he'll probably do it.
