  • Can confirm. I was once given a cocaine cigarette without my knowledge and it did have enough of a stimulant effect for me to notice something was off (though I was expecting a spliff, so it was easier to realize that it was having the opposite effect), but I absolutely did not get any kind of high.

It was mostly just increased heart rate and anxiety with a little nausea, like being overcaffeinated.

  • Okay, wow. His mom asked him not to because she was worried about him, he obviously had to back out.

/uj I actually think the world would be better if more people listened to their moms before fighting people (and I agree that the fight would not have gone well for musk), but I don’t think that fits his worldview very well, and I do think he was using it as an excuse

  • I suspect it’s because NPR doesn’t have consistent revenue year to year, because they do rely on donations, and spacex probably doesn’t have a consistent budget (because extra revenue would immediately be allocated for executive bonuses, or more charitably, expansion).

  • Text is never 100% black, but rastered.

Does “rastered” mean the image is mapped onto a very fine grid and each square is given a 0-100 value for intensity of ink? I looked it up, and it seemed like the squares are given a binary value, but this is nowhere near my wheelhouse and I’m honestly not sure I understood the Wikipedia page, let alone the references

  • My grandmother was very much a catch, but there’s no way I have a picture of her friend, who married a whole family. I don’t even know her first name, because despite a 50+ year friendship, they met as adults and called each other Mrs. Lastname.

I do think this woman must have been an incredible cook or something. Her companion was by all accounts a very dedicated priest otherwise, but that’s the only story I’ve ever heard where a priest gets any quasi romantic leeway (obviously, the church was far too lenient with sexual abuses, but the real reason for the vow of chastity has always been to avoid splitting loyalties and to control expenses, so a 60+ year financial and emotional commitment to a woman approximates that much more closely than the abuse).

  • My grandmother had a good friend, who was widowed young. Her brother in law remarried her, as I’m told was slightly old-fashioned, but not unheard of at the time. He then died in WWI, and the other brother was a priest. He got special dispensation to support her financially, and they lived together with two bedrooms they after his retirement. In their eighties, they moved into one room, with two twin beds and two attached dressing rooms, ostensibly for safety reasons, but we never knew if they were in love.
