  • I’m very, very susceptible to addiction, but the thing that makes it easiest for me to curb a habit is to pretend I’ve already moved past it. If I think about junk food, I intentionally think of overly sweet, salty and artificial foods and (internally) express my distaste. With smoking, I think of the smell of an ashtray in the rain; with drinking, I think of cleaning up day old beer with a hangover.

Saying “I don't really have a sweet tooth” is what made me lose my sweet tooth.

  • I had an app that made me solve a simple polynomial equation to unlock my phone between 22-7am because I was taking ambien at the time and I didn’t want to risk it.

That could work, but we’d have to find a problem that hegseth can actually solve sober.

  • That’s the definition of a good pet name: one you like but wouldn’t want to saddle a human with. Please also note that you don’t want to call every name around your neighborhood in the event of an escape, and your vet will judge you if you call your dog something horrible, but at least you’re the only one the name reflects poorly on.

  • Tbh, if I could give my hypothetical child a value, it would be prudence. That’s just reasonableness, unrelated to prudishness. Iirc chastity meant something like humility to people in the 17th and 18th century, which is not something I would want to name a child today, but it’s less creepy than the modern meaning at least.

  • It’s technically possible for everyone, barring some specific quirk or injury, but men generally find it easier to only shit. I looked it up a while ago and the research was American, so I do wonder if it’s because American men tend to pee standing up and they therefore have a bigger mental barrier between #1 and #2.

I’d like to see the study repeated with men who sit to pee or women who stand (it’s possible and not inherently more difficult than for men, but clothing and culture make it a lot less common than the other way around), because I suspect that the mental barrier is the key here.

I suspect there’s a difference because of other culture-related urination urges. I grew up doing a lot of swimming in lakes, and I was never really discouraged from peeing in the lake, as long as I wasn’t right next to someone (probably pretty gross for some people, but I honestly can’t bring myself to find it very gross). That’s my main experience with rapid, immersive temperature changes, and I still feel an almost overwhelming urge to pee when getting into or out of the shower or any body of water. I can pee immediately before getting into the shower, but that doesn’t make a difference. Infants have the temperature response too, which is why you need to be careful changing a diaper in the cold, lest you get peed on. It can be trained out of you though: a friend of mine grew up swimming competitively and had a lot of experience jumping into and out of pools, where she was discouraged from peeing (thankfully). She no longer feels any temperature related urge to pee that she notices.

  • Somewhat off topic, but once upon a time I worked as an insurance adjuster for litigated liability claims. A commercial customer of mine tendered about 12k lawsuits in which they were named as a defendant (it was a novel type of lawsuit and they were a big player, imagine what the roundup lawsuits are like for Monsanto) all at once.

For background, insurance companies are required to make a reasoned determination of coverage within 30 days of receiving notice of a claim. If that’s impossible, they can file an extension within 7 days of receipt, but there would have to be one extension tailored to each claim. Additionally, once coverage has been established, it’s more difficult for an insurance company to change their mind and rescind it (insurance companies make the contracts, meaning they make the rules, so courts are not especially forgiving when they get confused about how the rules they made apply).

Basically, by sending us over 10k new kinds of lawsuits all at once, they were trying to force us to extend coverage for as long as it took for us to find very good reasons to deny each individual claim. Unluckily for them, basically everyone except about four of us with poorly managed ADHD was remote. We all transferred everything to the remote people and we spent about three weeks just hyperfocusing and reading through the lawsuits. In the end, we were able to respond in time to about 80% of the lawsuits and we filed extensions on the rest in time (though tbh, their insurance department probably felt similarly overwhelmed by ~2.5k extensions).

I don’t have much pride about my work there, but that felt very good. Especially because I honestly have less sympathy for this company than Monsanto

  • Not sexy vibes, but friendship vibes. They each do favors for the other and then get bashful about having positive feelings for each other. Fanfiction writers can pretty easily use that as a jumping off point for modeling how the characters would act if they did have romantic feelings for each other.

Yes on bashir and Garak though. I resisted it at first, but I’ve fully given in and have read exclusively that for the last week.

  • I’m tall, blue eyed, fluent in German, and I married a German, so racists always consider me “one of the good ones”(until they actually talk to me). It was still absolutely night and day to go with my husband. It’s probably worth buying a friend lunch.

  • I’m sorry that this is only tangentially related, but I’m 30 years late to a fandom and I’m itching to bitch.

I’ve been trying to look up fanfiction for DS9, and it’s fucking astounding how much quark/Odo porn there is. I get that they’ve got vibes, but it’s just too big a leap for me. Quark’s getting some serious character development lately (I’m in the 7th season) though, so maybe something changes soon.
