  • The part about the texas crisis made me think it's about why the USA is not a single grid, while Europe is one.

Iirc one big reason made the crisis that severe was their grid is separate, so they couldn't buy electricity from other states.

Also if that's the case than using screenshots from that webside is quite misleading. That site uses live data, so if the 2 screenshots were taken at the same time, one of the continents was at night, so solar panels were not working... An avarege or aggregate map should be used, not live data

  • These are not synchronous grids, but some other kind of boundaries. With synchronous grids the US should be split to only 3 zones, and most of Europe would be colored the same. So I think the kind of map you used is not the best for this joke.

World map of all synchronous grids:

From the website it sounds like that is a map of electric companies or something like that. So this map is not directly related to the Texas crisis. Most of these companies share electricity between each other.

  • 4 hours missing, what were you doing that time? 8 hrs of sleep should be enough, than you have 16 hrs to watch the screen, those are rookie numbers.

  • Gratis and libre used usually to differenciate the terms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratis_versus_libre

Both of them are latin words so I expect they show up in similar forms in most European languages. Free is a Germanic origin word.

In Hungarian we use the word Gratis as well with Hungarian spelling: "Grátisz" even though Hungarian is not an Indo-European language. Libre is not used in common speech here.

  • He speaks about free in "free software". not a general meaning.

But the meme says "free software" and implies that the real "free software" alternatives (linux, gimp, blender and friends) are shitty, and they are used only because of their price. These are not "free software" alternatives, but gratis software alternatives, or freeware alternatives. that is my problem.

  • No, they are not free, they are gratis alternatives.

"Free software" is one term, and it's meaning was defined in 1986 by RMS. Non of these software existed that time.

The word "free" in our name does not refer to price; it refers to freedom. First, the freedom to copy a program and redistribute it to your neighbors, so that they can use it as well as you. Second,** the freedom to change a program, so that you can control it instead of it controlling you; for this, the source code must be made available to you.**

But there is nothing next to it for scale, so it's possible that it's much bigger. Artist impression:

  • If you read the thread they got an answer to their question, then OP posts this rant here like its a classic "windows is stupid" thing, while simply a user tries to do something which is too complex for them, and blames their lack of knowledge on the os.

  • I never said it's good ux, but it's working

  • Pebkac. Gui equivalent of chown perfectly working on windows and supports recursing into directories. If the questioner doesn't know how to login as an admin they miss some absolute basic computer usage knowledge, and a general help forum thread wont help them.

  • Other 2 answers describe current situation, but the origin is much older. In 1699 Repubublic of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik) ceded Neum to the Ottoman Empire, to prevent land attack from Venice, as Dalmatia was part of Venice that time. Than BiH and Croatia just inherited the borders.

  • Imagine having a choice in an election.

US vote rules were updated last time in 1965, here rules change before each election, usually 3-4 month prior.

I noticed recently that they stopped publishing 23:59 laws. You know laws which are published on the official website one minute before midnight, and they are valid from the next day. I dont know why they stopped, maybe they did this because it was during a state of emergency?

Migration emergency is still ongoing since 2015, last time they extended until 2024 sept. We had covid emergency and inflation emergency as well. I think the "there is a war in a neighboring country" emergency is still ongoing. I don't know because the "WAR" billboard ads were replaced with "join the army" and "Orbán is PEACE" ads, I dont know if they are related to this

Lol they have debates there, in television. We had debates, last time it was in 2006.

I'm looking forward to the 2026 elections, its possible that something will change, lol

Before the EU election each opposition party got 10 minutes to speak in the state television. This was an improvement from the 2022 election, they got only 5 minutes each that time. They cannot get any other screentime between elections.

But because of my work I met with guys from Tanzania, and some were coming from some *stan, (maybe kyrgiz? I dont remember) so I know from them that it could be even worse
