  • I am disappointed but not surprised. The attitude of men here reminds me a lot of default subs in Reddit. People tend to be more civil, but there is so much "but what about men?" when talking about women's issues or belittling women still. Business as usual on the Internet, but I can see why it would cause women to avoid Lemmy.

I haven't been back to Reddit, but it makes me miss the small niches where I didn't see that as often.

  • White male punishments in the US

Young: "oh, he's so young. We don't want to ruin his promising life over a little mistake."

Middle: "where is the evidence? I bet the other person is lying. It's not that bad. He will get a slap on the wrist if anything."

Old: "he's unfit for punishment because he is old and has diseases that primarily affect old people."

    Everyone else

"Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."

  • Very true. But when it comes to loneliness, I've heard far more about "the male loneliness epidemic."

The male loneliness epidemic is often cited to me and used to silence women/NB folks when we try to discuss our safety and support groups. It is supposedly women's (and other not-men's fault) that men are lonely.

I just searched it up and apparently NPR has something about it now. https://www.npr.org/2025/02/17/1263527043/its-been-a-minute-male-loneliness-epidemic-real

  • Thank you. I am doing pretty much as well as one can given the circumstances.

Unfortunately I have lasting damage that has disabled me and makes it pretty much impossible for me to do anything of real substance to make things better, but I am doing everything I can.

  • Child abuse and neglect are illegal, but not always enforced in my country. United States.

I was a gay child that was medically neglected and later homeless. Even more frustrating, they claimed me on their taxes when I was an adult and got money for caring for me even though I didn't get any support. I knew a girl that was beaten by her parents and social services didn't do anything because she was fed and housed and the foster system was overwhelmed in her area. I even knew someone that was removed from their home because they were beaten by their parents so bad they went to the hospital. Their siblings were not removed (so they remained living with an abuser) and they were forced back to their parents after six months. No jail for any of these people.

  • The only truly "good" consumption is to only use local products ethically produced from members of your community. The further you get from that, the more opportunities for the transaction to stray from "not good."

It is very difficult or impossible to be 100% good.

When I consider this, my main concerns are "do I want to give money to this company?" and "is there a morally better alternative that meets my needs, including going without?"

Once you answer those questions for yourself, you should have a better idea if you want to continue doing business with them.
