No, management needs to hire more people. One cannot hire for only a skeleton crew and expect things to always go as planned. People get sick, life happens.
If the minimum number of people to run a department is 3 people, you cannot have just three people hired on at any time. What about sick time and vacations, something that is needed for happy, healthy, productive workers? I would far prefer 5-7 people. We can survive with three people and it will happen, but when we have more people in at the same time, we can catch up on other stuff too.
When I was in management and so many people had to call out, I did not turn the screws on them and blame them for the poor performance of the day due to understaffing. I blamed my manager for not allowing me to hire more people I had begged for, for quite some time. This is where the blame should go.
Taking care of yourself is not lazy or selfish, such as recovering from illness or needing some time off. Reaping the lion's share of the output of someone while demanding even more from them is. Don't let those in power distract you from their own greedy bad behavior.

I mainly wanted to make sure I wouldn't inadvertently weaken a union. I recognize I miss a LOT of things that are obvious to others but I am trying to learn. Being autistic and raised in a very conservative household has necessitated me having to think carefully about the life lessons I was taught and to logically work through cognitive shortcuts as I identify them.
It is very cool. I am not sure how they are avoiding scooping out marine life while gathering the garbage. It looks like it can avoid scooping up something large, like a dolphin, but what about smaller organisms like jellyfish?
Got a real stupid follow-up question: besides asking in an interview or discovering the fact in the news or a web search, is there a way to know if the reason a company is hiring because the union members left?
What is stopping the company from hiding this fact? I want to believe it works but every time I am hopeful about something like this working there is something I am missing that makes things business as usual.
