  • most portable units i've seen are the one-hose kind, which barely does anything because it creates negative pressure inside and then the house is just sucking hot air in through every crack

you have to have a minisplit installed if you want proper AC, which is hundreds of dollars. also, it's cool if you already have AC installed, but there's not gonna be an AC installer with free time when there's a massive heatwave like this, because everyone's clamoring for AC.

  • there's more "funny" stuff in that thread, like this:

“We hope that the U.S. will understand the strategic importance of East Turkistan to its efforts to resist Chinese global hegemony. East Turkistanis look forward to a mutually beneficial partnership between the United States and East Turkistan to counter China’s threat…"

"please, we want to be the next ukraine"

  • no, i think azerty takes the absolute cake, but the german layout is also dogshit. it's qwertz for one, which is shit. and the placement of { [ ] } are absurd.

and it's not necessary that these languages have shit layouts. look at the polish programmer's layout, that's a sane way to add extra letters.

  • the brain's actually trying to understand what things are made of, and it's guessing at that based on the light that enteres the eye.

this is why when you pick up a thing outside and take it inside, it doesnt change color (edge cases exist), even though the light that reflects off of it into your eye absolutely changes a lot.

  • realistically, nobody uses all the units.

eg, decimeters are practically unheard of.

anyway, start measuring things around you. like your fingers, your hand, your ceiling height, that sort of thing. and then remember what those measurements feel/look like. that'll give you something to compare other things to. you can do the same thing with volume measurements and so on.

for example, i found that one of the knuckles on one of my fingers is exactly 4cm long, so i always have that with me.

  • the germans had already lost by the winter of 1941. barbarossa had no strategic path to victory except to win it all during that one summer and fall and collapse the SU. when that didnt happen, they were fucked.

they kept the war going cos they were fascists, but they had no chance of winning. they had no conception of how to achieve victory (beyond trying the same thing they did in 1941 but with a worse army, while the soviets had a better army). they had already lost, they just refused to admit it for years.

  • it's that, yeah, but also i think destroying russia has become a quasi-religious thing for the respectable liberals of europe. remember, these are the people who are still salty over istanbul. they'll still be calling crimea ukrainian 500 years from now.
