I continue to maintain that Chromebooks are toys. Any real productivity is just not possible with them. I would rather an older Lenovo ThinkPad T4XX series that I bought off of Amazon than a brand new Chromebook.
I run my own instance so I simply added a block in the instance configuration. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say the folks at lemmy.world have most likely done the same.
Yeah, Threads can do all it wants. I've set a preemptive block. I want nothing to do with Threads. Of course, I cannot control what other instances decide to federate and get my content that way. But I won't make it easy for them.
Sadly, I have. The best I can say for mental health residential facilities is that they help to stabilize you. They provide food, shelter, and care for you while you are there which lets you focus on recovery. Some are better than others. The better ones provide you with a comprehensive after-care program and ways to get continuing, ongoing support.
I know I should not find this funny, but every time I hear about NK firing off a missile I think of Trump's reference to Kim Jong Un as "rocketman" and I am laughing.
Check out Slack Nebula.I personally like it very much and used it to build a software-defined WAN to support my family's needs. I use a point to point WireGuard tunnel between my VPS and my home network to support self-hosted instances of Mastodon and Lemmy.
I'm an ex-redditor. Had I not used or known about reddit, I would never have known about Lemmy. Likely the same for Mastodon had I not been a twitter user.
I honestly had my sights set on doing some sales and consulting based on the ERPnext platform, an open source solution that uses Frappe. I am still working out some of the wrinkles but I am wondering there might be a business opportunity because ERPnext looks like it could literally be game-changin.
I can respect where you're coming from, and largely, because I feel the same way. I am in no way qualified to give you any paternal advice because I don't have children of my own. I can only speak to the mistakes my parents made on my brother and I which actually subjected us to ridicule and bullying from classmates. My parents carefully managed what my brother and I would be allowed and not allowed to watch on TV. One of the results of this was not knowing what The Simpsons was all about when the first episode aired. The fact that we had no idea what our peers were talking about left us in a bad way. Now granted, our parents never explained to us the reasons and benefits for doing what it was they were doing so it felt autocratic. If I had to guess, you are probably taking a very different path that helps your children to understand the reasoning why they would be better off, sans social media.
The morality and religious police as a concept is really chilling. I can only imagine that certain religious fundamentalists in the US of A are watching this with interest because they would love nothing more to have their religion codified into law. This is why I hate all religions because intolerance of other religions is a feature, not a bug.
I agree with you fundamentally. How do you feel about social media that is decentralized, open source, and non-corporate like Lemmy, Friendica, Pixelfed, et? I think these decentralized platforms are much less toxic because toxic people quickly get banned and shared with others. Furthermore, I think that with proper education of what social media is and what the positives and negatives are - including adverse consequencies - could be very beneficial. When social media is done in a positive way, it can be a great way to build friendships and exchange ideas and information. That much said the corporate social media is awful and in no way would I want to subject children to it as it could set them up for psychological trauma with real and lasting consequences to their mental health.
Thank you! It never occurred to me to consider haproxy to do something like this and I think it is exactly what I am looking for. It's definitely worth further exploration. My subscription for email service is about to run out and I'd rather not pay for something I don't have to.
I would be very interested in this! What do you mean by raft consensus? Ah, never mind. I used Google. Still I would be very interested because I cannot see myself using a corporate provider like Tailscale and I like the idea of a controller-less setup.
Ah thanks for letting me know about that. I thought the instances view was only for admins.
