  • Hey, it's okay. I've been there and done that myself. You'll find it useful to look at both Dockerfile and docker-compose.yml files. A mistake I made early on was thinking I could replace a Dockerfile with a docker-compose.yml one. The Dockerfile itself describes how an image should be built. The docker-compose.yml file describes the environment and fetches images. It also may pass variables to the Dockerfile.

  • Ah, I see. I hope some maintenance tools will be forthcoming.

  • I started learning docker first by how to customize an image. Since Alpine Linux is a popular light weight distro, I started with customizing it and moved from there. I also explored other people's Dockerfiles to see how to use a Dockerfile to customize an image to containerize an app.

I found almost every YouTube howto on the subject matter very frustrating and often making the assumptions that you note. I also read the reference documentation on docker's website. It's not easy and it's time consuming. I'd say I am good enough to be dangerous, not much more than that. Mostly, I've modified other people's images to suite my needs

  • "But where is the fun of that?" says Elon Musk probably.

  • What really is upsetting is that Musk has billions with which he can use on a lark. Most of us would consider 100,000 an impossible risk. Billionaires are the problem. I repeat - The problem.

  • This is certainly positive news. We need more competition in the processor field. Having essentially a choice between Intel and AMD got us malware like the Intel Management Engine and its AMD equivalent. With a monopoly comes enshitification.

  • Exactly! We have an issue with anger mismanagement. It's coming out on our fellow class members instead of the people responsible for the predicament. This is carefully done by design through crafted agitation propaganda.

  • I don't know that a lot of Americans feel that way. It may seem that way because assholes are generally the most vocal of a group. I certainly don't want protestors to be owned. Protesting is free speech and should be treated as such. Freedom can be inconvenient to some people.

  • That's pretty cool but I don't even wear a dumb watch, let alone a smart one.

  • I feel like your advice is not emphasized enough in tech circles. Our field is constantly changing and evolving so success is often predicated on willingness and eagerness to learn.

  • What area of the tech industry are you starting in? It would help to know so we could tailor the advice to you.

  • Bandit is looking mighty dapper!

  • I just took a look at the repository for pict-rs and unfortunately nothing in the official docs about cleaning up images. Did you happen to use a bot to assist you in finding communities? If so this might be the reason. After two weeks of running, my image size is only 2.2mb. I should also ask you what the size of your database is. The activity table can get awfully big and very quickly.

  • I don't remember now because it was a long time ago. It happened when I lived in AZ.

  • There's probably not any one single thing that I would do but interestingly enough I was charged once with a misdemeanor for providing food to the homeless and arrested, finger printed, and then released. At the hearing, the arresting officer failed to show and the judge, being a rather empathetic and progressive individual had the following to say to me:

Since the arresting officer has seen fit not to respect this court's time, I am formally dropping the charges. I will go off of the record for one moment: Young man, some laws were intended to be broken. I applaud you for choosing wisely. Back on the record: I will order the record of arrest expunged because I see no benefit to society in having a record of this young man's arrest for performing what is essentially good civil service. And so ordered

I am reminded that there are good people in this world.

  • I'm having the same trouble. Also, I really don't get the whole craze with folding devices. To me, it just seems like one more (expensive) point of failure on an already fragile device. Or maybe I am just old - So get off my lawn! 😆

  • I also used to be heavily critical of NASA, but as it turns out, their innovations for space travel have had some nice unintended side effects for life here on the 3rd rock from the sun.

  • Hey I am all for it. The alcohol from the beer would kill off any remaining bacteria anyway. I would definitely give this a shot, especially if it were an IPA.

  • Awww! Sorry you didn't get much sleep. Your tortie looks like a sweet gurl.

  • The only way it would not would be if the ISP only allowed TCP ports 80, 143, 443, 465, 587, 993, and 995. Many public hotspots in my area do this plus deep packet inspection. You would need OpenVPN or SSH for a TCP-based VPN and then a means to disguise your traffic to look like an https session, over say, port 443. It's not easy to defeat but very doable.
