  • they cannot change the law, but also they don't have to follow the law because they aren't within that country's jurisdiction.

From what I've heard these are german laws and their instance is based in austria. Those are different countries.

  • Its not hard to learn but it does take time to become confortable with it. I recommend renting a car. Driving manual car for the first time with the added stress of driving in a different county is a recipe for disaster. By all means try it. Take up the offer of that lesson, but its unwise to have to rely on a manual car for transport when you've never driven one before.

But also make sure you actually need a car. The US is built with fully car dependent infrastructure, so americans are taught their whole lives to just assume they always need a car. That isn't the case everywhere, and might not be where you're going. Be sure to check.

  • Grand juries are entirely one sided. The prosecutor tries to convince the jury. There is no defense. There is no one there to dispute anything the prosecutor says.

There's a saying that a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich. Grand juries aren't an effective barrier to frivolous law enforcement. Any prosecutor can convince a grand jury on anything. Those who can't, don't stay prosecutors for long.

  • If you make it to the Canadian side without papers, the Canadians will refuse you and send you back. On the way back you have to go through the american checkpoint. Each country's boarder station is built on their own side of the boarder. That's how they get nabbed in land crossings.

Although they can add an exit check, there isn't the infrastructure for it. Immigration plazas widen to many lanes at the inspection stations. The outgoing side is just a normal road. Adding an exit check would either slow traffic to a crawl by checking cars on a normal road, or require expensive renovations at every highway boarder crossing. Its possible, but not something they can implement quickly or quietly.

  • It means the law works.

If they truly believe in their faith, then they will serve their sentences faithfully, as a show if their devotion to their god.

Protecting child abuse should have a cost regardless of the motivation.

  • ummmm.... what?

this discussion is about lemmy.ml, not lemmygrad.

If you have anything relevant to my previous comment please say so. What you typed is incoherent.

If you have information about the exchange post a screenshot, and stop the insults and name calling.

  • This feels like cherry picked examples to try and frame nutomic as being transphobic. Its always this one screenshot, of a comment made in response to something else that I have never seen posted any of the times this has been brought up. A response without context is kind of sus.

Being uninformed or misinformed is not bigotry. There was a time when I probably would have said something similar, before I learned more, and knew better. I don't think this is strong evidence of a real issue.

Until the point that he makes more questionable statements about trans or lgbtqia2s+ people, this is fine as far as I'm concerned. I don't think what I have seen so far is actionable.

Edit: from reading Ada's comments in this thread I endorse her stance.

From the very strict enforcement standards of this instance, the DM was enough to warrant a ban for nutomic, but not enough to warrant defederation for ml. That seems fine until or unless more information comes to light.

  • And who is in control of, and has been for most of the last 30 years, that system?

    the two party duopoly

And it definitely won't be solved by continuing to elect the same people who are making it worse.

the other people you propose support the exact same policies that make it worse.

Your solution continues to not be a solution.

  • The attack was done by the "yemeni armed forces" which is the official military of yemen.

However, yemen has been in a civil war since 2014, with command of the military split between the government and the hoithi rebels.

The spokesperson who took credit for the attack in the article, yahya saree is described by wikipedia as being part of the houthi faction.

This seems to be much less of an official yemeni military action than the text of the article might lead you to believe.
