Tf are you talking about, unless being gay involves raping men, being pedo also doesn't involve raping children. Even as a cishet non-pedo you will often encounter situations where acting on some attraction you feel would be anywhere from morally questionable to straight up illegal, and most of us manage to deal with that just fine. Of course that's going to be tougher for someone whose entire experience consists of that, rather than just part of it, but nothing about being pedo forces you to become a child-raping piece of shit.

Of course psychiatric care is important, but the point the other commenter was making is that it's currently impossible to change anyone's attraction, so it's not a pathology that can be "cured" in this way. Any psychiatric care currently has to be aimed at helping people deal with being pedo without acting on it and also not developing any other psychological afflictions because of suppressing their attraction. Trying to "cure" the attraction itself would indeed be akin to gay conversion therapy: there's no scientific evidence it works, and it's going to do more harm than good.

That one does not sit in the center of the retina though, and doesn't have anything to do with higher motion-sensitivity in your peripheral vision. The macula, which the other commenter describes, is what's responsible for that, and it's a different thing than the blind spot.

You're conflating the blind spot and the macula there.

We do not have a blind spot in the middle of the retina. If that were the case it would be pretty problematic for vision. What we do have is what's called the Macula, an area of high concentration of cones and low concentration of rods. Cone cells give us highly detailed color vision, while rod cells only give us overall brightness, but are much more sensitive to light. That's why, as you mention, we're more sensitive to movement in our peripheral vision, and also why the center of our vision performs way worse in very low light situations. (Ever seen a faint star that seems to vanish when you try to look right at it? That's why)

We do actually have a fully blind spot, but that one sits not at the center of the retina, but off to the side. It's where the optic nerve enters the retina, and it doesn't have anything to do with better/worse perception of movement, it's just fully blind and always gets interpolated by the brain, it literally fills it up with what it thinks should be there. If you get a small object right into that spot for one eye and cover the other eye, it will just disappear.

From an aesthetic standpoint it just looks better^1 , and by now gaming consoles are so Mainstream that the additional accessibility the colors offer is not a good enough reason to keep them anymore.

^1 subjective, of course, but if you look at modern, big corporate design a lot of it is trending towards minimalism, very little use of color, etc.

From a purely ethical standpoint I don't see a problem with taking CSAM that's apparently already flooding Lemmy and using it to test whether your filter works before nuking it. At least as long as you're making sure you're not exposing anyone else to it.

The described problem wasn't that the car didn't see the lines, it was the car steering into oncoming traffic when it couldn't see the lines. Lidar could potentially very well help with that, by giving the car a better model of the surroundings letting it better reconstruct the intended road path even when the lines are faded, and also see oncoming traffic better and avoid it.

It still runs like garbage on my 13700K and 3060Ti, depending on the area. Sometimes, High settings are fine, but way too often I have to drop down to "Original" to get somewhat acceptable FPS (>40) at 1440p with Balanced DLSS. Am I doing something wrong, or was it just even worse at launch?

What are you even talking about. The people on beehaw are not trying to pretend that the internet as such is nice. They are creating a community with a specific code of conduct, and that is just as real as any other place on the internet. You can still talk about shitty stuff, and you can have dissent, conflict and discussion on there, nobody pretends that that all doesn't exist. The only requirement is that you approach with respect and well-meaning by default for everyone around, there's nothing else to it. On the contrary, I feel like people who don't want to follow these rules are the ones pretending - pretending that they're not interacting with real people, that anything they say doesn't affect others.

You seem to be under the impression that any "nice" space must be fake, because, I don't know, people are inherently not nice, or something, and thus everyone must be just pretending? That's a pretty sad way to view the world, and absolutely not true in my experience. I know plenty of great places and communities made of people that just genuinely want the best for others by default, both online and offline, and it takes no pretending, it only takes a bit of caution to keep the very few people out that are not there to participate constructively and can't or don't want to clear the pretty low bar of respect and well-meaning.

There's no irony here, that's exactly how it's supposed to work. My point is not that every space on the internet needs to be as protected as beehaw. My point is that it's valid for people to create and seek out spaces like beehaw if they feel like it, and to be protective of them, which you didn't seem to understand. But of course it's just as valid to not need that and engage in the kind of argument we're having here right now, because different places can have different rules, and that's totally fine, as long as you respect the rules of whatever place you interact with.

That is such a weird take. People go and create a space deliberately aimed at making people feel more welcome than on the rest of the internet, and you come and shit on it because... Why? Are people not allowed to create and seek out spaces where they're at least semi-protected from the bullshit greeting them everywhere else? Or do you feel entitled to interact with everyone on the internet however you like, regardless of their needs, and are upset to find out that sometimes, you can't?

I'm glad for you that you don't have the need for a place like beehaw, but other people sometimes just want to take a break from all the bullshit, and they have every right to do so, even on the internet.
