  • don't expect them to thank or forgive you.

Should already be used to that. aka, being a parent. Some lessons have to be learned first-hand. Id still advocate for supporting their dream. My approach is generally to explain why I disagree and then support them while they find out the same thing for themselves and try not to say "I told you so." Sometimes theyll surprise me.

  • IMO, It's a better name. I have almost given up on Stash a couple of times because it is a pain is the ass to search for it.

Also, on the flip side, IMO it is easier to remember than Czkawka.

  • Blackberry still exists (albeit mostly as a patent portfolio.) People just stopped buying them.

  • I use those both regularly. And people seem totally unable to tell whether I am doing it on purpose.

  • "He looks like he fell out of the Ugly Tree and hit every branch on the way down."

  • IMO, "dog in this fight" is more common where Ive lived: Appalachia, mid-Atlantic, Midwest. I wouldn't be surprised if it also varies by region, class, etc.

  • Sure. It ain't rocket surgery.

  • It is not always feasible to differentiate. I only know a dozen or so Japanese or Korean words. Fewer Chinese. Some of the rudest people Ive seen in public were probably Chinese tourists in Myanmar, but I only had my guide's word on their nationality. IMO, Japanese are usually much more polite in small numbers. By the busloads, less so. I cant reliably tell Chinese from Korean without hearing them speak a bit.

More, though, I just feel like cultural norms like personal space are just very different in Asia in general, so I find it strange.

Another one that has gotten me is that Eastern Europe doesnt smile in public. They literally think you're mentally ill if you smile like an idiot in public.

  • Ive not noticed that at all. In my experience, Russians are absolute shitheels when abroad. Americans aren't much better. Most Asian tourists are super rude by Western standards of behavior. Europeans are mostly fine unless theyre very old or visiting the US.

  • Joke's on them, I live below the poverty line; I already wasn't able to buy anything.

  • yeah, ive had to do it for a fairly long time because I was near or above the tree line. not much shelter nearby, so squats it is.

  • I spent 20 years in and around IT and the more time I spent around computers, the more superstitious I got about them.

It makes sense. Humans create and maintain systems so complicated that no single person can fully understand them. The classic example illustrating this is the essay: I, Pencil

  • Make noise. They will hear you coming and gtfo. They'll leave on their own, so let them. Dont corner them.

  • Stick a bowl of water on top of it.

  • Ive seen that movie way too many times and I can never hear that phrase without wanting to finish it now.

  • Get after it, then.

  • Oh yeah? Johnson?
