  • Perhaps not, but I am not certain if "amateur" is the right word in describing the creator contents on YouTube. Certainly, we're not talking Disney-level video quality, but most of the creators I follow appear to have some skill in AV recording and video editing. Plus, they do present some things that are of interest to a wide variety of audiences. Therefore, I don't necessarily see such content as "amateur-created". Now, that's not to say there are no amateur-level content on YouTube. I'm sure there are plenty of contents that really are of poor quality and not worth your time and money.

Please be aware that I am not trying to convince you to jump onboard YouTube Premium. That's your decision.

  • Hmmm...well, their fight against the adblockers is quite concerning, especially if the ads are so intrusive that they disrupt the user experience in viewing content, thus pushing more users to get Premium or go to another platform. It's not uncommon these days to find people migrating away from Big Tech platforms and going to other platforms that have more reasonable and sustainable services that benefit both the client and the vendor. The challenge is the content, which may not be as numerous as what you would find on YouTube, and along with that, there's the challenge of convincing creators to go onto those other platforms.

But, I am doubtful that Alphabet will be financially impacted. They might see a loss around YouTube, but that loss could be offset by profits from other products in their portfolio. Furthermore, because they have a paid option, it wouldn't be surprising to see people going for that option, especially if the cost is reasonable, and they are getting premium services not just for themselves but also their friends and family.

  • Do you anticipate your instance eventually growing to the point where you would have to outsource your hosting and start taking donations to cover the cost? And do you believe donations would be enough to pay off the costs, given the voluntary and variable nature of donations? What is your opinion of using ads to cover the cost of hosting?

  • That's an interesting analogy!

It would appear that the overall nature of the Fediverse is to have numerous small instances that can communicate with each other, and since instance size is a factor in determining the cost of hosting, many people could host without seeing a huge chunk of their income being taken away for hosting.

Of course, I would imagine other factors that would determine whether someone should host or not, like having the technical competence necessary to troubleshoot server issues.

  • If we do have some instances running ads, wouldn't that run counter to the goals of the Fediverse? It's my understanding that much of the migration from Big Tech platforms to Fediverse platforms is to escape the intrusive nature of ads and to prevent the Big Tech companies from taking user data and giving it to advertisers, something that is a major privacy concern these days.

  • Well, if Firefox does become unusable for you, then I don't think you would be at fault for switching to a Chromium-based browser, like Vivaldi. Usability is an important aspect to consider.

Have you considered using a Firefox fork, like LibreWolf?

  • It isn't the default search engine on my browser. I'm using Kagi at the moment.

  • Yeah...I don't know how you all feel about this, but I'd much rather talk to an actual person than to a sophisticated chat bot. That's not to discredit the actual (and potential) benefits of something like ChatGPT, but I doubt we will solve loneliness through the use of such technology.

  • Some positive news for a lot of Linux Mint users who have been complaining about the lack of Wayland support. However, as the blog post listed, it's only going to be experimental in the next major update of Version 21. Still, it'll be good to experience the change.

Also, very clever on the naming schemes used by the Debian and Mint teams for their stable and unstable releases.

  • I was asking a similar question a few months ago, and my search turned up Joplin. It's a free, open source app that works across multiple platforms and can sync data through a cloud service, either through Joplin's own cloud storage or through a third-party cloud storage like Dropbox.

  • I recommend Linux Mint. It comes with good default settings but is configurable. The Cinnamon DE is exactly like that of Windows, so you don't need a lot of effort to start using it. Mint comes with some pre-installed apps like Firefox and LibreOffice, but they may not be the latest versions, so you can purge them afterwards and reinstall through one of the package managers.

Speaking of which, Mint comes with APT and Flatpak as package managers, but Snap is disabled by default. You can enable it, if you want to.

Mint does not come with any gaming apps pre-installed, but Steam can be installed, and many games work on it, especially those that are verified to work on the Steam Deck. Lutris is another game app you can install, and that allows you access to other game platforms like Blizzard, but don't assume that all games will work perfectly through Lutris.

  • Well, I mean, didn't he change the standards for what it takes to get a blue checkmark? This is no surprise to me.

  • I'm going to view this as a boon to the good people in Europe.

  • Sigh...alright, they can give it a shot. Personally, I see no reason to do a reboot of this series. Things ended quite well in Season 2 of the original, and I'm happy with what I got.

  • Indeed. Olrox may have his reasons for aligning with the Vampire Hunters against Erzebet, but I doubt he will do something, even indirectly, that will give them more power. He needs their help, but only to fulfill his purpose...whatever that is.

And speaking of what Maria and Richter have to go through to even stand a chance against Erzebet, I can think of one thing that might give them a chance: Item Crush.

  • Yes! Maria was also the character I wanted to see the most. I don't recall the Castlevania games ever explaining how she controls her animal familiars, but Nocturne gave a pretty good explanation of it. The animal familiars are mystical beings summoned from a magical dimension, and Maria has the ability to conjure portals that lead from the magical dimension into her dimension. But, how she actually formed the relationship with those animal familiars in the first place would be an interesting story. Plus, there's one animal familiar that did not show up in Season 1. I think you know which one it is, given your experience with Rondo and Symphony, and I think the reason why it didn't show up is quite obvious. Perhaps this is the growth that we will see with Maria in Season 2.

  • I liked the series so far, and as someone who played Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, I think they did a good job in portraying Richter and Maria. I did not find Maria annoying, but I do agree that more could have been done with her. I also agree that a little more time could have been dedicated to showing how Richter and Maria grew up. One complaint I do have is how Season 1 appears slightly rushed, and as Richter and Maria are two of my favorite characters from the game, seeing how their relationship and skills developed would've been awesome. The games don't go into much about their relationship, other than stating that they are distantly related and have special skills for fighting night creatures and vampires.

However, as this is only Season 1, I am going to wait and see how the story pans out.

Another thing I like about Nocturne is that they went in their own direction with the story, rather than taking the story that was presented in Rondo of Blood. I doubt they would get very far with the whole "hero & heroine team up to rescue damsels in distress" story that was in Rondo of Blood. That might also explain how they took characters like Annette and Tera in a whole new direction. Annette and Tera were two women you had to rescue in Rondo of Blood, with Annette being Richter's girlfriend. Their roles were so minor in the game that you really didn't care much about them except as an objective to complete in the game. In Nocturne, they were given pretty important roles, with new backstories and personalities that made you care for them.
