  • Yeah exactly. I mean it takes some balance and they absolutely need to be sensitive. But it is like this in some professions. Once you put in the effort to put away your lunch, put on the gear, drive somewhere etc, you're then going to engage, almost no matter what. At least talk to people and try to assess the situation. Same for firefighters, paramedics and even some technicians. And it's the right call in lots of inconspicuous situations. At some point they stop giving a f.. and just bother people because the alternative is they'll occasionally have to return to the same situation several hours later and it'll usually have become worse in the meantime. Plus after some days in any of those jobs, you'll notice that half of the people lie to you in one way or another. So you start to not trust people anymore, but make sure yourself.

(And I think this situation kind of matches this. They could have asked for an ID because it's standard practice, or because they're bastards, or because they needed some lame excuse to spend more time talking to OP to assess the situation and see how people react and behave.)

  • To be fair, it's often difficult to judge a situation over the phone. Some crazy people sound like regular ones. And even more so in the opposite direction. Normal people might sound crazy in emergency situations. So there isn't really a reliable way to tell them apart. And they then need to dispatch someone to find out.

  • It's an extreme perspective and an oversimplification. So necessarily wrong if you state it this way... Neither do all people in Israel seem to support this, nor is "innocent" any attribute that fits the purpose. Technically like a newborn baby should be pretty much innocent. An adult may not, even if it's just an act of omission. But it's not really a philosophical question in this case, is it? And it's not even what this is about. So I'd say that sentence is immediately wrong on technicalities.

  • I mean you can host anything. It's just not reachable from the outside. And Fediverse or anything that gets data pushed in, won't work. The common method to handle all of this is to use some tunnelling solution.

  • What do you mean with the word "reject" in this context? I mean they're all Abrahamic religions and share that foundation. But they all disagree on who is the last prophet. Islam would even acknowledge Jesus. He's just not the most important prophet. And we christians have all the old Jewish stories in the Old Testament and we study them and deem everything to be true. What the Israelites and all the other tribes did in the Iron Age and how it all came to be. And our messiah was a Jew. So there is a strong bond between those religions. But I'm not very well educated on the Jewish perspective on this renewal and spin-off of their religion.

  • Lego robots, those drawing robots, something that you can program to move forward, forward, left... A line follower. I'd be cautious at 5 yo and just letting them swipe on tablets and stare at flashing, colorful videos/games for too long. That just teaches them to mindlessly consume content. So I'd allow them to plat KTuberling, draw something in Paint and program a toy robot, but wait before giving them a whole PC or tablet of their own. And a tablet teaches nothing. That's the reason why lots of people these days don't have a clue how technology works.

  • I'd try to invest some time first to fix the issue, before hopping between distros. Unless you haven't installed anything, in that case, go ahead and just try 5 distros and see which one works best. Idk. Make sure you're running the 535.216.01-1~deb12u1 drivers or whatever is current in Debian. See if you're actually using the Nvidia card or a Intel iGPU whenever this happens. Some people have also claimed turning off the GSP firmware helps. You could try both Wayland and X11 and see if it's the same issue. You could install newer drivers from Debian experimental. Or try Linux Mint Debian Edition if you want something very similar to Debian but not exactly it. And how do you measure graphics lag?

  • I mean their main use case is gaming... And you can do a few more AI things, LLMs aside. For example generate pictures, voice cloning (or changing), you can have a vtuber avatar and do live-streams as an anime girl. Or run Jupyter Notebooks with arbitrary machine learning projects. Do virtual reality. Or run a big CAD program and design some objects. Maybe even run finite element method simulations to see how your workpiece will deform with stress...

  • I think that's true. I'd somehow like to have different words available. Because I think it's a big difference whether it's Minecraft Hitler. Or the actual Nazis we have on the rise as of today. For example the richest man on earth "accidentally" doing the Nazi salute in front of a right-wing audience. And we know he also likes to share nazi propaganda on social media and supports authoritarianism. If we call all of them the same, we also normalize stuff... So yeah.

  • I roughly followed that back in the day and I think there isn't much to these claims. He seems to sometimes have a bad taste and is a bit naive in some regards. But that's not being a Nazi. And it's been 7 or 8 years and he seems to have learned from that, or was there any more controversy? I don't follow him, nor have I watched any videos for some time. And this video also doesn't convince me to watch his content...

Edit: And I don't want to apologize that behaviour. He definitely did these bad "jokes", I just think he genuinely thought it was funny and he was some sort of clown. But that makes him an idiot, and not a nazi.

  • From what I know, I assume yes, the relation between model size and speed/performance should be linear. Maybe there is some additional small overhead making it a bit faster or slower than expected. But I'm really not an expert on the maths, so don't trust me.

And maybe have a look at this bugreport: https://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp/issues/11332
I think it matches your situation. They resolve this by messing with the batch size and someone recommends not to use Vulkan on an iGPU.

  • Small update: I didn't get any reaction (so far). The post in their about community has zero votes or interactions. I've then escalated things and filed a bug report on the bot's project page. Also with no reply in the last 3 days. So I guess either they're busy with other stuff and their "bridge" bot is practically unsupervised... Or they don't care... So I'd say your gut feeling was correct. I'll give them some more time, 9 or 3 days isn't a lot for a hobby side-project... But I think at some point, Fediverse admins might want to think about de-federating and effectively shunning them, if it turns out that instance is effectively unmoderated and pulls in problematic content, and isn't even liked by a good part of the user base here.

Kind of a bummer to be honest. But the whole place looks abandoned. The instance hasn't seen updates in more than a year. There aren't any posts by a human for a year. Their posts don't really get interacted with... And there are deletions in their modlog, but always with quite some time in between.

  • I'm just unsure why this is surfacing now. I had that feature available in LineageOS for the better part of a decade. And similarly, it's also been part of other manufacturer's customizations for quite some time now (like Samsung).

  • Two things to consider:

    • It's likely illegal to take other people's content and re-publish it on your own terms
    • Peertube admins have to pay for storage. So don't dump random noise there. It has to be useful / worth it. Especially if you make someone else pay for the server space.
