  • I meant the app, not the streaming service, but thanks!

(All of my music is on CD and in Ogg Opus format)

  • I have an iPhone. While VLC is good, foobar2000 Mobile is really the only free music player that works the way I want.

iTunes no-longer runs under Wine, so the official Music app is not an option.

EDIT: Clarified that I meant the Apple Music app, not the streaming service.

  • If anyone's looking to jump ship, here are a few alternatives. Bear in mind, though, these are not (yet) official PrivacyGuides recommendations. All of the apps are FOSS.

    • Authenticator Last updated 12th February DOES NOT SUPPORT EXPORTING KEYS
    • 2FAS Last updated 29th July
    • Tofu Last updated 29th February 2022 DOES NOT SUPPORT EXPORTING KEYS
    • ente Auth Last updated 28th July REQUIRES ONLINE ACCOUNT
    • FreeOTP Last updated 19th May PRODUCT OF RED HAT
  • I use SkyTube, but NewPipe is also very good. LibreTube and VueTube look promising, but I don't have the right hardware to run them.

  • The app I'm using on my iPhone (foobar2000) supports OGG Opus. However, decoding takes about a second, resulting in a noticeable gap between songs.

EDIT: It seems that HydrogenAudio have fixed the Opus decoding in foobar2000 Mobile.

  • Already did that. Thanks though.

By the way, owning an iPhone is not my choice. I'm 17 and still living with my parents, and my dad is a huge Apple fanboy. Ideally, I'd have either a Pixel with DivestOS, an Xperia with SailfishOS, a PinePhone with PostMarketOS, or an old Nokia 3210; but for now I'm stuck with my second hand iPhone SE.

  • Thanks, but I'm an openSUSE user. I was considering AAC because of a recommendation from MakeUseOf or some other tech news website.

  • I have an iPhone. The storage I have is all I've got.

  • I'm willing to bet the response would start with "As an AI language model, I cannot..."

  • Strangely, on Pearl, the brand new Linux with brand new software actually runs faster and cooler than OSX.

There was also a period of about two years where Amethyst was more powerful than Garnet, although I would blame this on Garnet trying to run Windows 10 with only 4GB of RAM while Amethyst had 8GB and ran Linux Mint.

I tolerate slowness, but I also usually manage to reduce it to the point where it's not a problem anymore.

  • Yeah, I just made a basic HTML page, which I keep in my home folder. To set it in Firefox, open settings and change the homepage from "Firefox Home" to "Custom...", then enter the path into the box underneath. If you're using a local file like I am, remember to put file:/// at the start of the URL. The process is similar in SpiderWeb, which is my browser on OS X.

  • I think Apple will have to, since they're also going to have to allow sideloading. However, knowing Apple, they'll probably wait right up until the deadline the EU has set before actually giving us what we want.

  • I can just imagine your IT dept. running into the Dean's office to complain, only to be met with yet more Linux. Hilarious!

  • Homestly, as soon as PeerTube gets more users or someone makes a video sharing platform on Gemini, I'll be able to completely abandon Google.

I already use CloudTube, but it's obviously still dependent on YouTube.
