  • I haven't used my tablet in months, but I will always recommend Mull.

  • I like Okular, but I also use Xournal++.

  • Yesterday, I spent half an hour trying to figure out why SDDM wasn't seeing /usr/share/wayland-sessions/sway.desktop before I realised that the reason it wasn't showing up in the menu was because I hadn't installed any fonts; so it was there, but it was invisible.

  • I do, for three reasons:

    1. Hackers. It's unlikely that anyone would hack my webcam, but there's always a chance. Maybe I'm paranoid, idk.
    2. Hardware exploits. Three of my laptops are too old for me to update the firmware with fwupd, so I cover the webcams in case there's some critical hardware-level vulnerability which could be exploited; or in case one of the three-letter agencies are in there.
    3. Consequences. Despite the incredibly low chances of anything happening whatsoever, the possible consequences are too bad for me to want to risk it.

    I'm paranoid, aren't I...

  • It's okay. I'll probably end up switching to Arch, though.

It works, but there are a couple of issues:

    • HiDPI is not supported by cwm, so I've had to do "duct tape" fixes on everything (changing .Xresources, changing GTK conf files, increasing the font size in polybar). Qt apps aren't playing ball.
    • The WiFi card isn't supported by any BSD, so I'm using a dongle.
    • The fan doesn't come on as often as it does on macOS, so the MacBook can get rather hot.
    • The headphone jack supports optical jacks as well as standard 3.5mm ones. Under OpenBSD, however, the LED inside is constantly on. This isn't a problem, but it's not normal.
    • Polybar can't seem to access any system information (e.g. disk usage), but I suspect that has nothing to do with the hardware.
  • I've already gone and installed macOS 11 alongside OpenBSD (although I'm going to distrohop until I can find something that "sticks"). I might have a look at patching Monterey, though.

As for those specific versions, High Sierra was the oldest version with decent software support, and Mavericks has those lovely skeuomorphic icons. I know it's old, but I was using OSX Snow Leopard (alongside crunchbang++ i386) until I got this MacBook Pro.

  • Huh. Never really considered that. Guess I'd better go and rebrand my Mastodon profile...

  • Ah, I see. In that case, the setup looks great!

  • I mean, I see no issue here other than the conky being in the foreground.

  • Minecraft

  • Building a house in the woods without planning permission.

  • Catalina could be the one, in that case. Essentially:

    • Mavericks is the only supported version with skeuomorphic icons
    • High Sierra is the earliest version still supported by enough developers for my needs
    • Big Sur is the latest version supported on the MacBook

  • German is also good, but I personally feel that Proton provides a better experience than Tutanota or Posteo.

  • Ah, now Kaspersky itself isn't a bad AV. However, given how much data AV software has the capacity to collect and where Kaspersky is based, I don't trust it. In that scenario, I may as well switch to Yandex and start using Mail•ru instead of Proton.

  • If there's anyone out there still using Windows or who otherwise needs an antivirus, just use ClamAV. It's free and open-source, does a pretty good job of finding viruses, can be run as a daemon, and is extensible.

Want a different index? Fangfrisch. Want a GUI? ClamTk. Using Windows? ClamWin.

I honestly find it so strange that it took me around eight years to discover that this was a thing. I was forced to use McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky, BitDefender, and all of the worst AV software on the market before I eventually switched to Linux.
